Back to Work

Chapter Seventeen

Today was going to be my first day back to work. I wasn't ready to go back but I really had no choice. I have already missed more than a month of work and according to Karina I had a lot of work to do.

"Aren't you so glad to be back to work?" Karina asked as we rode the elevator to our floor. She had told me about the work I had missed.

"Oh yes, so excited and ready for everyone to ask me where I have been. You know I just love it when everybody is all up in my business." I said sarcastically, she rolled her eyes.

"You know you don't have to tell anyone anything, you're here to work not talk about your personal life. Besides it's only a matter of time people start to find out you are going out with the boss's son. Then after that they won't care where you have been."

"No kidding, I'm sure they are going to say the only reason I got the promotion was because of that."

"Hey not true but you shouldn't care what people think. You know you got the promotion because you have worked your ass off and there isn't anyone else that deserve it more than you. So forget what anyone says," she said as the elevator stopped.

The doors opened and we walked out, I could feel everyone staring at me. The whispering got louder as we walked, yup should have known better than to think nobody was going to.

"Hello Mr. Porter, welcome back." Stella my assistant said. "Mr. Bennett is waiting for you in your office, is there anything I can get for you?"

"No Stella that will be all, and thanks," I walked into my office and Mr. Bennett was looking out the window.

"I see you made here alive," he said as he turned to face me. "How many times were asked about where you have been?"

"None, just got a lot of stares and people whispering about me."

"Wait until they find out your dating my son." He sat down in one of the black leather chairs in front of my desk.

"Yeah not really looking forward to that."

"Neither am I, which is why I told Toby to not come here for a while. With him coming back I know people are dying to find out where he has been, Then of course they will find out you two are dating. I'm just waiting for the media frenzy to die down. This thing with Clayton is bad enough, trying to clean up his mess is going to take a while."

"Yeah I bet it is, so what's the story everyone is being told about Clayton?"

"Nobody knows that it was you he was trying to kill and I have my people making sure they never find out. I didn't think you needed that kind of stress or attention. All the press is getting about all this, is that Clayton was involved in some shady deals that backfired on him. Which really isn't complete made up, that was why Clayton was so set to get his hand on the company."

"That actually sounds believable, so what about me?"

"Everyone thinks you had an accident, fell out of your tub and threw out your back." I chuckled, "Sorry it's the best one we could come up with that would match up with the time you were out."

"It's fine, I understand and I would have rather than be the story everyone knows then to truth, for Toby sake."

"Well actually Karina wanted to say you were pushed down the stairs by your ex, she seems to believe that is more believable."

"Ugh yeah she's right on that, it wouldn't be the first time I have been attack by an ex." He chuckled, "Yeah it seems I attract the crazy ones as she says, but Toby is the first sane boyfriend I have had."
