Doing the Right Thing

Chapter Twenty-One

Toby hasn’t stayed with me since I got promoted last week. I haven’t seen much of him either, he said he was busy with school. A part of me thought he was lying, he was avoiding me and I had a feeling it was something his father said to him.

I wanted to ask his dad what was going on with him, but had a feeling he wouldn’t tell me the truth, especially if he had something to do with it.  That day he left in such a hurry without even saying goodbye.

I even had Karina try and get a hold of him, but he wasn’t answering her calls or messages either. Something wasn’t right and I needed to find out what it was.

“Stella I’m going over to Mr. Bennett’s office for a bit in case you need me.” I said to her as I walked out of my office, turned to face me.

“Yes Mr. Porter, I mean Declan.” She blushed and turned back to her computer. I like her, she wasn’t like the other assistants. She was quiet and shy, but she got all her work done without a problem.

My walk to his office wasn’t long, now that I worked on the same floor as him. I walked to up to Grace’s desk, “Hey Grace I was wondering if Mr. Bennett had a free moment. I need to speak to him about something important.” She gave me a flirty smile, it was one I had seen one too many times here. God I couldn’t wait until everyone knows about me and Toby dating.

“Of course Mr. VP, so how are you liking having your office on this floor now?” She asked as she looked on her computer.

“Not bad, the view is great and the fact that it’s a lot less noise doesn’t hurt either.” she smiled at me. “But I do miss working close by Karina, she made it fun working all those long hours.” Something flicked in her eyes, I was sure it was jealously. Karina wasn’t liked very much here, just because of our close friendship.

“Hmm yes she does seem like a fun person,” I could see her jaw clinch, I know when I tell Karina about this she was going to laugh her ass off.

“So how do you like working for Mr. Bennett, you have been his assistant for a while now.” She smiled again, girls were so weird with their mood swings. Thank god I found Toby and wouldn’t have to ever worry about that until we had kids.

“Not bad, but I bet it would be better to be your assistant. Working for such a handsome bachelor like yourself has to be great. You know everyone here is pretty much jealous of Stella. I know there are quite a few of us assistants that would take her job in a heartbeat, if given the chance of course.” Not going to happen, I liked Stella too much to let her go. I didn’t want to deal with unwanted attention.

“Well Stella’s an excellent assistant, I don’t think I’ll be replacing her anytime soon.” She pouted and pressed the intercom. “Mr. Bennett, Declan would like a moment of your time.”

“It’s fine, go ahead and send him in.” Mr. Bennett said over the intercom. “Well you heard him, go on in.” she said, “Oh Declan I was wondering if you would like to grab a bite or drink after work?” She batted her eyelashes and gave me coy smile, some girls were really annoying.

“I can’t sorry, I’m meeting up with Karina.” She frowned as I opened the door, it looks like I just made her hate Karina even more but I know Karina wasn’t going to care. I walked into Mr. Bennett’s office and closed the door behind me.  He was at his desk looking down at some papers.

“What can I do for you Declan?” he asked as he looked up at me.

“I wanted to talk to you about Toby, it’s just I haven’t seen him in a week. He tells me he is busy with school and can’t spend time with me. That would be fine with me, but he is ignoring my calls and messages. I just want to know he is doing okay.” Even though I have been with Toby for a while, it still felt weird talking to Mr. Bennett as my boyfriend’s dad instead of just my boss.

“He’s fine, you know the semester is coming to an end and he has finals coming up as well. Don’t take it the wrong, but he doesn’t need you distracting him.”

“I know that sir, but I just get the feeling there is something else to it.”

“What are you are you saying?” He said as he leaned back in his chair and stared at me. His gaze made me a bit nervous, like I should watch what I say to him.

“I just think that he talked about us coming out as a couple and you told him no. If that is the case then I want to know why you wouldn’t allow us too.”

“Declan sit down,” I took a seat in the chair in front of his desk. “When Toby came back and told me everything, I believed it. That’s just something you don’t make up, but when he told me it was you, that changed things.”

“Changed things how?” I asked as I shifted in my seat.

“I had someone do a little digging about your past and what I found wasn’t good.”

“What do you mean?”

“I care about my son and frankly he being with you is going to end with him getting his heart broken. To how you have even lasted this long with him is a miracle.”   

“That was the past, I love Toby and I don’t ever plan on letting him go. I shouldn’t be judge for my past relationships, I didn’t love them the way I love your son.”

“That isn’t a risk I’m willing to take, he had his heart broken already because some guy used him and Toby had to walk in on him with someone else. I’m not about to let that happen to him again.”

“Are you kidding me?” I said as I stood up. “I almost died for your son and I would do it again because that’s how much I love him!” I yelled as I slammed my fist on his desk. “What is this really about?”

“Sit down and calm down before I have you escorted out of the building.” Mr. Bennett said sternly. I sat back down and glared at him, he had no right to be getting our business. “You say you love him okay fine, but what if you two don’t last? Do you realize what will happen?” I shook my head. “You two come out as a couple, won’t matter but you two break up and then all hell breaks loose.

“What do you mean?”

“Declan you are the VP of this company now, you will be in the spotlight from now on. Things don’t work out and once the media hears you two broke up, the media is going to eat that up. I don’t need Toby to think he was just pawn for you to use, to get higher in this company.”

“But we know that’s not true.”

“I know, but that’s the media for you and people are going to believe it. I’m just trying to save Toby from that, it’s nothing against you. If it was really against you, I would have never made you VP. I just can’t have that happen, I keep you as VP what is the media going to say about that?” I was starting to believe that all good things came with a price.

“Then why make me VP, you had to know that this was going to cause problems for us?” I just wanted a straight answer from him.

“It’s simple you’re perfect for it and I like your work ethic, you’re dependable and you have good leadership. I know it was really you that made sure everything got done. You let Curtis take credit for it, so I know you’re humble. I wasn’t lying when I said I tried to find someone else, but I always came back to you.”

“A position like this should be the best thing in the world, but right now it’s just feeling like the worse thing ever.”   

“More power always comes with more burden.” I just nodded my head, “Remember after tomorrow’s press conference and we official name you VP, everything about your life is going to change. Just think about it and do what is best for Toby. If you love him as much as you say, the choice shouldn’t be that hard to make.” I got up and walked out of his office without saying another word. I walked passed Grace and ignored her calling my name. I just wanted to be left alone while I thought about what I was going to do. The right thing to do was to let Toby go, but sometimes doing the right thing was hard.
