The sound of the door knocking brought me from my dream with a start. With a girlish yelp, I fell off the sofa and hit the floor with a soft thud.
Scrambling to my feet, the door was knocked again, this time harder and with a quick brush down, I then headed over and opened it to find the Mayor standing there, his narrowed eyes flashing with surprise when he saw me.
"P-Payton," He cleared his throat, "May I come in? There's things I wish to discuss-"
"I know."
With stiff limbs I side-stepped and watched the human breeze past me, his scent lingering in my nostrils. For a brief moment all I could think about was how easy it would have been to go over and snap his neck, to sink my fangs into his flesh and drain him dry.
He deserves it, something deep and dark whispered, make him feel pain like he made us feel pain...
"...Here?"
"Excuse me?"
I quickly pushed away the voice inside my head and shut the door with more force than necessary. Without a word, I then headed over to the kitchen and yanked open the fridge door before grabbing a blood bag and sinking my fangs into it.
Swallowing nosily, I then turned and lent against the cold object, watching the Mayor's face as his skin paled.
"I-I was just asking where the others are?"
I took my sweet time, eyes locked on the man who seemed to squirm under my scrutiny. I couldn't deny feeling a little bit of satisfaction as he couldn't meet my steady gaze. The monster inside purred darkly, and fleeting thoughts of ripping his jugular vein open crossed my mind.
"They said they would be here, looks like they aren't showing up though." I raised an eyebrow. "Something wrong with just my company?"
The Mayor quickly shook his head and went to sit on the edge of the sofa. "No no, of course not." He cleared his throat and shifted his weight, a clear sign that he was uncomfortable.
Good, the dark part of me whispered, so he should be for what he caused us.
Finished with my snack, I threw it in the trash before silently heading over and relaxing into the arm chair. Marius was always the one to claim it, he was his favorite seat and I could smell his lingering scent.
"So you want to know what the prisoner had to say, yes?"
He nodded before sitting forward, resting his elbows on his knees. "Before we begin, I... I want to apologize for the ordeal you went through, I-"
"I do not want your apology."
"And I understand that but truly, I am sorry for what happened. I had no idea that the killer had set up cameras... I don't agree with the killings though, I assume they weren't locals?"
My jaw clenched and I bit back a growl of annoyance. I could see from the way he barely managed to meet my eye, that he was only saying sorry in the hopes to save himself from the regret and guilt he felt.
Running my tongue over my fangs, I sunk deeper into the chair.
"Can't sleep at night can you."
It wasn't a question, and I didn't want an answer yet the human seemed compelled to reply anyway, color coming to his cheeks. "I do find it quite hard to have a good night's rest these days..."
Unable to help myself, the words left my mouth before I could stop them. "Good, after what you did to me I hope you never have a good rest ever again."
