When I got home from Church, dad was waiting for me.
"You know, you don't have to wait for me to get home. It's not like I'm some rebellious teenager." I said and put my jacket on the coat rack.
"I wasn't waiting for you. I heard their van come up. I want to talk to you about something." dad replied.
"Whatever," I said, "What do you want to talk about?"
Dad stood up and went to the kitchen. When he came back, he had two cups of hot chocolate. He motioned me with his head to follow him to the living room. I followed after dad. When we sat down, dad handed me one of the cups he was holding.
"Well?" I said.
"I was talking to a co-worker. They have a teenage girl, and he divorced his wife. He felt sorry for his daughter, so he adopted another girl that was around his daughter's age. When he told me this, it got me thinking. You don't have anyone except for me, Sara, and whoever else you talk to. You need someone else. How would you like to have a brother?" dad caught me by surprise. I raised my eyebrows.
"Why do you feel sorry for me?" I said and stood up.
"Ever since your mother died, our lives have changed. I'm never around, so you're always alone. I thought having a brother would- I don't know, encourage you." dad replied.
"I would love a sibling! Thank you, for thinking of me, dad," I hugged dad, "can we talk about this more tomorrow? I think I'm just going to go to bed."
"Yes. Goodnight." dad replied.
I ran upstairs and brushed my teeth, took my hair out of the bun, and got dressed for bed. Before I fell asleep, I started thinking. A brother. I was going to get a brother. I've always wanted a younger sibling, and now I'm finally getting one. Thank You, God. I couldn't believe I was thanking someone I didn't believe in, but I guess I was just excited.
