In all his life of interaction with female acquaintances, he had never needed to come up with an answer for a question like this one. It froze him, like a child caught red-handed for stealing...

"Jackson, you like me don't you?"

He wasn't expecting a straight ball like this. His lips parted but no words found their way out.

Yes. I do. From the first minute you caught my eye.

How was he supposed to say something so frivolous as that?

What if... She didn't like me?
What if... She was going to tell me something hurtful?
What if... The newfound friendship had to take an awkward slant?

Staring at you with a blank face was all he could do... until you opened your eyes to get those answers yourself.

Your eyes met his momentarily before he realised he had his jaw dropped.

He gulped them shut, unsure of what he should do in those few torturous seconds.

You didn't back down either, maintaining a dead steady eye contact. You wanted to know if the feelings were mutual.

After what seemed like forever, he finally found his voice again.

"Wow."

He let out a gentle exclamation, "You're... one very gutsy girl... "

Jackson broke the eye contact first, looking away, visibly embarrassed, and seemingly a little helpless.

You laughed to ease the tension in the air, "It's okay, I get it."

Cooly, you stood up and took your stuff. Calm, collected, unaffected.

So chill.

You couldn't deny the sense of disappointment you felt, it was like a premature rejection but you knew way better, from the way you'd seen how relationships turned out with popular guys like Jackson. It was better to dispell false hope than cling onto uncertainty.

"So," you continued, "you heading home?"

For once, the sweet talking glib tongued Jackson couldn't think of what to say.

He stood up silently, packed his stuff and walked alongside.

No. No.
This isn't it.
It isn't supposed to be like this!

You couldn't tell what was going through his mind while you kept your composure. He seemed distant and suddenly quiet, and it made you uneasy.

It's no biggie Gabby, you can do this. You've just met him what do you expect? Sheesh.

Unknown to them, JB decided to be a good brother and was patiently waiting at the side gates.

As if on queue, the 2 of you appeared walking silently, eyes to the ground.

JB got out of his car, leaning his back onto the side of his bonnet, as he observed from a distance.

He smirked to himself, "it's about time they picked a fight with each other."

Knowing you and your tactless ways of speech, it would take a rock not to react. JB was always right about people and Jackson was no surprise. From the way he talked, he knew he was a good kid but probably one that never needed to deal with hardship.

It had to be a matter of time before you would argue over differences - at least in his opinion.

You walked along not noticing JB.
