"What?" Carlos whispered. Cecil nodded.
"They told me today. They were supposed to tell you today, but..." Cecil drifted off. His gaze drifted down to his feet. Carlos was still in shock. He wasn't blinking, or breathing. "Carlos?" Cecil asked. Carlos was still, staring at a spot beneath Cecil's chin. The moment of silence was broken when a nurse entered the room.
"Mr...Palmer?" The nurse asked, looking at Carlos. "I'm afraid we have some bad news--" But the nurse stopped there because Carlos had ran out of the room and continued down the hall. Several startled nurses watched him leave. Carlos ran out of the hospital and went straight to the car. He shoved the keys into the ignition and slammed on the gas. He quickly drove down the road and onto the highway, tears blurring his vision.
"Cecil can't have cancer! He CAN'T!" Carlos pounded on the steering wheel. Several cars honked their horns at Carlos, blindly driving through the street. As soon as Carlos had arrived home, tears quickly spilled down his cheeks. He scraped the doorknob trying to unlock the entrance with his keys. Carlos ran into the house and he slammed the door behind him. He didn't even get to kick his shoes off before he collapsed on the floor of the kitchen. Carlos' glasses, streaked with tears, clattered on the floor beside his hand. "Damn it!" Carlos pounded the floor with his fist until it hurt to move his hand. He sat sobbing on the floor until his tears were just a few drops down his face. Soft claws clicked on the hardwood, and Khoshekh, who was still at the house, quietly slipped around the corner and around Carlos's wrist until she settled down next to the crying man on the floor. Carlos looked up from his tear-filled eyes at the cat staring down at him.
"What do you want?" Carlos asked. Khoshekh uttered a sound that was between a growl and a low, moaning noise. Carlos glanced at Khoshekh's three purple eyes and dark violet fur and he smiled. Carlos scooped up the cat in his arms and immediately began sneezing. Khoshekh made her weird noise again and quietly sat in Carlos' arms. Several tears traveled from Carlos' face to Khoshekh's fur as he pressed his face into the cat's fur. "What am I going to do?" Carlos asked Khoshekh. She didn't respond. Carlos sighed and put Khoshekh down to grab a tissue. He cradled his face in his hands and wiped at his nose. Carlos took a moment to collect himself.
"I should go see Cecil." He said.
