Time felt like it had slowed down, not moving at all. Everything was frozen. Everything was cold, empty, blank. But not with him. With him, there was warmth. There was fire. He had every reason to live just to wake up next to his smiling face.

His beautiful tattoos.

His perfect hair.

His purple eyes.

The way he always smelled like lavender chewing gum and a rainy day.

He was purple and blue and indigo, but also lilac and pink and azure.

He was forest and chocolate and navy, but also chartreuse and powder and bright, like the last dying embers of a fire left to burn out. And just before he laughed, just after he tilted his head back but before his voice caught up to his thoughts, he was a roaring orange sunset.

And by god was he beautiful.

                                                                                  ~~~~~~~~
Cecil kissed Carlos, not caring if he bruised his lips or his cheeks. Not caring if one of the doctors walked in or if he died that very moment or if he would never get to see the dark forest green of Carlos' concentration or the bright tangerine of his laugh. Everything around him was muted gray, like just before a fog lets up, and everything looks frozen. But with Carlos, there was color. There was pink and orange and red and green and purple and blue. Everything was blue. They were covered in colors, too many to name, but Cecil didn't want to let go of the beautiful man who changed his life. His lips may have been purple but his hands were burning red, his cheeks were maroon and his heart was white. Carlos felt yellow. No, golden. The color exploded out of his eyes and filled the room, mixing with Cecil's purple to create a stunning metallic amber that moved like wax dripping off of a candle. Cecil opened his eyes not to see the rainbow of hues that surrounded the two lovers, but the person who made his purple into amber and his dark blues into light hues and his pinks into oranges like a summer sunrise. The person who made all the scary things seem less scary and made all the dark colors of him into something beautiful. And Cecil stared into Carlos' glistening eyes and whispered the one word that mattered the most.
A ray of light gleamed from where they sat.
The ride home didn't matter, nor did picking up the bottles and bottles of medicine for Cecil to take daily, nor did locking the door to the house or taking off shoes or helping Cecil stumble into the warm bedroom. Carlos scooped up Cecil and fell onto the bed with him, crawling under the blankets. Cecil wrapped his hands around Carlos' strong neck and buried his head into his jawline that smelled like soap and cherries. Cecil was so glad to be back home with Carlos, with their maroon curtains that let just the right amount of light in and their soft bed with the dark covers and the bottles of medicine on the counter that were sure to make Cecil better. Cecil smiled into Carlos' skin and breathed a heavy sigh of relief and comfort. He was finally back home. The world Cecil saw through his closing eyes slowly drifted away into a muted noir as his heart beat in sync with Carlos' slow, sleepy  breaths.
                                                                                     ~~~~~~~

Cecil got better. That's all Carlos could say. He got better. Despite the hospital's alarming accusations, he got better. He couldn't stop saying it. He got better, he got better. He couldn't stop grinning, seeing Cecil so close to him. The weather was perfect, and everyone in Nightvale knew Cecil recovered from their horrible epidemic. He could run with no fear of falling, and dance like they used to so many times in the bakery. The smell of flowers hung in the air and Cecil's hands were as soft as ever. The purple of his eyes were glowing with health and his lips were upturned in a glamorous smile. The silver of their rings scraped against each other along with their matching suits. Cecil smelled like a candy store in his purple suit with the long coattails and Carlos smelled like a forest in his scientific white suit with a beaker pin attached to the collar. Carlos held Cecil's chin in his hands and pulled him into a kiss, the most important kiss of their lives.

And when their lips touched, there was a rainbow of colors.

The End.
