Chapter 3
Jake's POV
I was walking out of the little room away from my mate. Ruth is so small and malnourished. Her striking red hair makes her stand out, though. I shake my head and focus on the oak walls leading to my office. I need to talk to my beta about this whole situation. I was calling for him through the mind link to meet me in my office. Finally making it to the heavy doors- I push them open and notice the dark desk to my left and bookshelves and maps flooding the walls around it. I sit down in my old chair and wait for Jason to enter. I hear the doors open as Jason walks in, barely tilting his head to show respect, "You called for me, Jake?" The tall, shaggy-haired man spoke.
"We have a female here, her name is Ruth, that has wandered into my lands, and she is frail and abused. Alex found her in the eastern part of the land. Izzie has her on bed rest in the infirmary due to how weak she is. While helping Izzie get Ruth food and a drink, I got a call from the Dark Shadow pack. The alpha explained that a very dangerous rouge had escaped. The description that the alpha of the pack gave me fits Ruth to the T -down to the black spot in her blue eyes. I wanted to keep her safe, so I lied to the alpha because she is my mate and because she is scared of everything. Whatever that pack did to her, it scared her," I tell Jason, filling him in on everything.
"So let me get this straight: a girl stumbles into one of the most well-known packs, scared and weak, which you helped is a given due to her being your mate- yet you lied to Alpha about having her. That is doomed to start a war," Jason expresses his concern.
"Mhm, when I mentioned the phone call to Ruth, she started to freak out. I even asked if she wanted to go back. She doesn't want to go back, of course. I don't know how to help her. She doesn't speak, and we know nothing about her," I puzzle back to Jason. His green eyes shimmer as he throws thoughts around in his head. "How bad is she?" Jason throws out the question.
I breathe in and place my forehead into the palm of my hand. "Ruth didn't even know we are mates because she lost her wolf," I hear a hum responding to my statement. "Jake, your pack will back you up no matter what, and I am not just saying that because I am your beta. I'm saying that because you built your pack from the ground up without help. You are strong because you help the weak, not because you hold a tile," He gushes out.
"Thank you, Jason. We will keep quiet about Ruth for now till she is stronger. We do not need the Dark Shadow pack on our case because they have an army. The Blood Moon pack land is massive, so please double security around the borders. Also, I will gather the pack soon and explain who Ruth is. I know there are questions about her," I finish while I write down my plans so I won't forget.
"I will let the warriors know about the change in patrol. You take care of your mate. There is a reason why the pack leader has a secondhand man. You can't do this by yourself," Jason tells me as he walks to the door. He turns around at the door, locking eyes with me. "And hey, Jake, congrats on finding her," He throws out, making me chuckle and proud to call him my beta.
