PART 2: Memories

"I am sorry... I have failed."

"..."

"She escaped before I could turn her back, and... she had a Koanan with her."

"...A Koanan? One of the pure Shifters?"

"His ears were rounded, so he hasn't transformed before. But I suspect he took her to wherever his people are encamped now."

"We have to find her. I need her."

"I know, dearie. I know. She and her friend were quite powerful, somehow they were able to break through my defenses. Again, I-I am not proud of this fact."

"I am indeed very disappointed in you. However, we may be able to use this to our distinct advantage."

"How so?"

"When we find her, we'll find the Koana. We can stamp them out once and for all. She can't stay in their encampment forever, and if she is in human form her face should be instantly recognizable to most of the kingdom. If she's been indoctrinated by her friend, she will likely join them in their escapades around the kingdom. We can find her, and search the memories of anyone we find with her to discover how and where they hide. Thus, the Koana will be destroyed, and I will have Aelwen."

"Excellent idea, dearie. But, I was wondering. Why Aelwen? Why did you choose her for your plan? Surely she would be perfect as a simple martyr."

"The people do not want me to lead anymore. Whispers of a war against me are brewing. I've ruled for 200 years, and they do not like the implications of that. If I reign through Aelwen, they will be pacified. They will be brought together for war against the dragons by their princess, a grief stricken, sympathetic girl spurred to fight for her kingdom by the death of her mother."

"Wonderful reasoning. I'm glad to have spoken with you again. I will begin the hunt for Aelwen. I'll capture her before long."

"Indeed. I'll be searching for her as well."

"...Really? In such a state?"

"Do not question me, witch."

"O-of course, dearie."
