"Okay! Since y'all did so good during your first week of college," The secretary with the texan accent announce, "we're going to offer y'all a treat. We've rented out the New York City Ice Skating Rink! It's going to be cold so bring a jacket! Other than that just have fun!" She squealed excitedly. The secretary was a platinum blonde with tan skin and a pearly white smile, obviously she used white strips, and she didn't look much older than some of the college students that went here. My theory is that she's no older than her mid twenties.
"Aw, Lucas, look! It's one of your kind." I said, pointing to the platinum blonde with the thick accent.
"Your right, Maya. Maybe I should take her ice skating instead." Lucas winked. I snarled, mad that I wasn't ever able to get to him.
"No no. That's okay, I'll just go with Zach." I tease. Lucas' expression hardens slightly and he grabs my arm lightly, just to make sure I stay put.
"You will do no such thing." Lucas said dryly.
"Relax, Cowboy, I wouldn't dream of it. Zach's got a dozen other girls anyways. I'd rather hang out with you." I explained and nudged him in the arm.
"Good, then let's go get ready." Lucas nodded and smiled.
"Alrighty, Huckleberry." I said and followed him to our room.
-------------
Once ready, we started walking down. I was wearing my blonde, wavy hair down with a black cross knit beanie on top. I wore an green army jacket, overtop of my white/cream knitted sweater, and my bottoms were a pair of tight black leggings that conserved the heat, I bought them from Big Bear Lake.
Lucas was wearing a red plaid shirt under a black jacket and black jeans. A simple Texan guy outfit.
"You're gonna freeze ya know?" Lucas said, gesturing to my cute but not covering outfit.
"I'll be fine. At least I look good." I offered as an excuse. Not letting on that he was the reason I wanted to look good.
Stop it, Maya!
"You always look good. Let's go!" Lucas said, sighing. I followed him, not processing his first sentence until we reached the lobby where all the rest of the school stood, except the Seniors. The Seniors got to stay in actual college dorms. Lucky.
"Okay, Let's go!" Mr. Matthews announced, guiding us out of the hotel and down the street. Towards the Ice Rink.
---------------
Once we had walked for a solid twenty minutes in the cold air, we finally got to the Ice Rink, Lenny's Ice Rink to be exact. We walked through the doors and were greeted with even colder air, and silence. No one was here.
"We've rented out the Ice Rink for you kiddos." One of the female chaperones said. "Go have fun!" Some kids snickered. "Not too much fun." She said sternly, focusing on the snickering kids.
They released us and we ran to the skate area, well the rest of them did, I brought my own pair of skates that my mom had given me last year. They're white and glittery and the blades are shiny and new-looking, probably because I had only worn them twice last year. I slipped them on and double knotted them tightly, then hopped up and started for the ice. As I was about to walk on, Lucas appeared beside me and squeezed through the door, right past me.
"That was rude." I sniffed angrily.
"I was only trying to help you get on the ice." Lucas smiled sneakily.
"Yeah, right. I'll do it myself." I said and placed a skate on the ice. Gravity however, had a grudge on me for some weird reason, probably because I didn't care enough to learn about it in seventh grade, and I tumbled on the ice, right into Lucas.
Lucas caught me with ease and chuckled, helping me stand.
"Are you happy I was here now?" He whispered cockily in my ear. I shivered and slithered out of his grip. Skating away from him. He caught up with me easily.
Stupid short legs.
"Hey, pancake, what's the rush?" Lucas asked, skating beside me.
"Go away and don't call me that." I huffed angrily and skated away rapidly, almost falling again.
"Maya, please wait." Lucas begged. I skated faster and ran into someone. Some who didn't catch me and we both fell over, me landing on top of him.
"Hi, Maya." Zach smiled. I smiled back.
"Hey, Zach. Sorry." I apologized, trying to get up.
"It's okay, babe. Don't rush, this is comfortable." Zach said, holding me on top of him.
There was no one else on the ice, they were all probably getting warm or doing what high schoolers do when they're bored. I'll give you a hint, it starts with 'S' and rhymes with Chex. Figure it out.
So Zach and I laid there for a few seconds before Lucas skated over and ruined it.
He pulled me up and pulled me toward him, wrapped both of his arms around me in a sort of hug, except I was still facing Zach and so was he. So it was sort of a backwards hug.
"Hey, you ruined our moment." Zach said, skating up to Lucas and I, pulling me from Lucas' grasp into his arms.
"She's with me, bozo. Don't touch her." Lucas said, pulling me towards him.
"Guys, I'm not a tug-of-war rope. You're going to rip my arms off." I whine, skating away from the two.
"I'm sorry, baby. Come here." Zach cooed, skating towards me.
Lucas growled and skating in between me and Zach.
"I said, don't touch her." Lucas hissed. Zach glared at Lucas and cocked an eyebrow.
"Or what?" Zach challenged.
"Or I'll pummel you." Lucas smirked. I gasped.
"No you will not, Lucas Friar." I told him, using his full name for emphasis.
"M-maya?" Lucas asked. I glared at him and skated away from the both of them to the corner of the rink, where the gate was. It was around 9 at night and everyone was at the arcade, or other places, so I was alone as I sat in the corner and cried.
I don't know why I was crying, I just was, probably because I didn't want anyone fighting for me. Or because I didn't want to see Lucas become someone he's not. Someone sat beside me on the bench, and I buried my head in their chest, crying my eyes out, but quietly. I looked up to see who it was and nearly fell of the bench. I scooted as far away as I could into the corner and looked away.
"Aw, come on, baby. Don't act like that. We haven't seen each other in a while. Oh and that Zach kid? He's gone. Went home like 2 minutes ago, said he was done with this field trip and stormed out, he's probably not coming back. Now it's just us." He said. I tried to scoot further away but I couldn't, He advanced on me. Sliding closer until he was almost on top of me, breathing down my neck, sending familiar shivers down my spine.
"Go away, Noah." I whimpered.
Noah. My ex. He changed schools during the summer of eighth grade and I thought I wouldn't have to see him again. I guess I was wrong. Oh, remember those kids who I said were only obsessed with sex? This is the guy. He is the epitome of those kids. That's why I dumped him.
"Come on, darling, let's go somewhere private." Noah said and dragged me away, I was too weak to protest and was dragged along into a dark room. To my doom.
