As Broderick polished off the last of Zubin's expertly baked sticky buns the following morning, her told Adhemar about his encounter with Varuq. While the sticky buns did help improve his mood, they did not make him look forward to the job any more than he had when he had first gotten the details.

"Seriously?" the gryffon said. "Why in the name of the gods would you accept payment before hearing the details of a job? Were you drunk?"

"Yeah," agreed Broderick. "I was a little."

"But still," countered Adhemar. "Now we're stuck working for that nasty old hag again."

Broderick shrugged helplessly. "Can't be helped now. Besides, according to the Great Vanishing Varuq, we aren't working for the Witch. More like working with her. Don't know what she wants the necklace for, but I really don't care. As long as they pay up, she can hang herself with it for all I care. Actually, I'd prefer if she did."

"Good gods, me too," Adhemar concurred. "We at least have a couple days to relax right?"

Broderick shook his head. "The necklace has to be taken no earlier than midnight on the princess's name day. We need to get up there as soon as possible so I can do a little recon. I have absolutely zero idea how I'm supposed to sneak into arguably the most secure place in all of Elazio. It's going to take equal parts skill and pure, blind, stupid luck. Should be fun."

"Wait a tick," Adhemar said. "The midnight that marks the beginning of the princess's name day, or the one that marks the end?"

Broderick thought for a moment. "Not sure. He didn't specify."

"Well that's a pretty big difference, don't you think?" Adhemar argued.

Broderick shrugged. "Doesn't matter. We'll just plan on swiping it at the midnight that marks the end of her name day just to be safe. Since the Midsummer Festival will be going on, it should make it a little easier to get in undetected. Or maybe the guards will be more alert because of all the hubbub."

There was a long moment of silence as both Broderick and Adhemar thought about the job to come.

"This is going to suck," Broderick said finally.

Adhemar huffed. "Tell me about it."
