Chapter 3
'Haynes!' I repeated his name, gasping loudly this time. Well done, because everyone wants to get bumped head first in the chest before starting a conversation, especially stolid guys whose faces were always only a type of expression: a murderous assassin. 'I-I-I...I...' That was the most "I" I ever had said in one sentence. My mouth opened and closed like a goldfish but no words seemed to want to spill. I wasn't expecting to literally crash into him when I decided to find him.
If he was surprised by the fact that I was standing before him with a bunch of my hair falling out of my bun and my shoeless left foot, he didn't show it. 'Whatever it is that you need to do, don't let me hold you up.' Daniel said, sounding peeved, before shoving me aside to walk down the stairs.
That snapped me out of my miming stage. 'Wait! Daniel!' I held onto his wrist and ran in front of him and planting myself firmly on the ground, blocking his path. Ho ho ho, I was so dead. Did I mention Daniel Haynes could kill a person with a single look? 'I want to talk to if that's okay with you.' I looked at everywhere except his green eyes and my gaze finally settled on the buttons on his shirt which were levelled to my eyes on account of him being tall and he was standing a few steps above me. Oh my gosh, I hoped he didn't think that I was a creep! The buttons were just the easiest thing to stare at at that moment. 'Can you just give me a couple of minutes?'
'No.'
'Alright! First off, why are you here?! This is the last place I would've thought you'd come to. I was just so surprised to see you here and I find it odd that a guy...a person like you actually take interest in ballet...it's really feminine...' The conversation (actually the one-sided conversation) became really awkward. 'Are you gay?' I asked abruptly. 'Oh, is that why you are always like this? It's okay, I won't tell anyone. We can become BFFs if you want. I've always wanted a gay guy friend but seeing as I don't have friends...yeah.'
Daniel sighed and ran his fingers through his hair. 'I'm a hundred percent straight. I don't like guys, I don't like girls. Happy? Just leave me alone.' See what I meant by the Hate-Everyone thingy?
'So you're gay.' I stated.
His brow furrowed even more. 'No. You are exactly why I hate girls.' He muttered. Ow, I'm only human. After a moment of silence, he finally realised that I wasn't going to let him go until he answered my question. 'My dad, he wanted me to watch my cousin. She was one of the dancers.'
'Really? Who?' Haynes has a cousin who danced ballet? If the cousin is a he, that would confirm the feminine genes running in the family. But as I recalled, no one in the academy had the surname "Haynes". It must be from his mother's side of the family.
'Get to the point.'
'Oh okay. Ooh I forgot to tell you, I'm Rebecca and I go to Westlane like you, I think you know that.' I held up a hand for him to shake but he just stared at it coldly and didn't budge. 'Or maybe not... Anyway, I need a favour from you. Can you please not tell anyone about what you saw tonight? I wasn't here, okay? You've never met Rebecca Fischer tonight, okay?'
'I can't take you seriously with that.' Daniel pointed at my cheeks.
Oh, my makeup was still there. 'Well, that's my point! The people at Westlane are sure to make fun of me. Rebecca Fischer as a pumpkin! I don't need any attention. I just want to make it through high school without being noticed. They're not suppose to know that I danced in the first place. Can you keep this a secret?' I asked him hopefully but it was very hard to read his face, as I said before, he had only an expression.
