Chapter 4
'Ow!' My hand flew to the spot where he flicked me - on my forehead near my eyeball. 'Daniel! How dare you- you-' I spluttered, shocked that he would actually do that.
'I can't believe myself,' Daniel groaned to himself, raking his fingers through his hair. 'I need you to be my girlfriend for a day for my father's birthday party.' He said as if every word was killing him a little more every time.
Woah, me? I didn't expect that kind of favour. I thought it'd be more like "I need you to give up your lunch because your sandwich always looked good". For your information, my turkey ham sandwich was to die for, at least in my opinion. I wasn't quite sure how I was suppose to react to his part of the deal.
'It would just be for a day.' Daniel added.
'Are you freaking kidding me?' I stood up so quickly I nearly lost my balance. 'Be your temporary girlfriend? You are just using me to get what you want, aren't you?'
'Well, if you don't want your secret expos-'
'I'll do it!' I said, cutting him off. Scrunching up my nose in distaste, I fumbled for the pen and slapped it on the napkin. 'Here. Now keep your end of the deal. Sign it.'
Daniel sighed, muttering something about weirdos before scribbling his signature onto the napkin. He really did have beautiful long lashes. He shoved the newly signed contract to me and handed me the pen. 'I will pick you up at your house today, 4.30. Wear a dress. Be ready when I get there.'
'What?' Did I hear wrongly? Today?! 'Hold up, today? I can't do today. I have homework to finish. In case you didn't notice, I have to write a ten-page long essay about Roosevelt!'
'See you later, pumpkin.' He waved and headed for the door.
'Don't call me that-' The door slammed close with a loud thud and I was left alone to stammer about my fate. It happened a lot.
Later that afternoon, I rode back home on my bicycle - the usual routine. As I neared my house, I noticed the gates opened and my guard was up. Mum would never leave the gates open, she was slightly paranoid. I cycled to the porch and jumped off, leaving the bicycle lying on the ground, and running through the unlocked doors into the house. Bags strewn across the floor along with mum's celebrity magazines and clothes were hanging off furniture. Did I miss something? Did a tornado just swept past here because the place was definitely trashed.
'Mum?' I called, slowly climbing up the stairs. What if there were burglars in the house? 'Mum, you left the gates open. Is something up?'
'Booyah!' A boy jumped out. With the spiked-up bronze quiff, sea green eyes and tanned skin, he was someone I hadn't seen in quite some time. 'Hey Beck! Did you miss your most favourite person in the whole universe? Come here,' he said, engulfing me in a tight teddy bear hug.
'Ryan!' I laughed, returning him the hug. I haven't talked or seen my older brother for two years now, ever since he moved away to college. 'What's wrong with you?' I demanded, pulling away from him and punching him on his arm. It probably didn't hurt that much, he had been working out. 'All those time, you never called! You know how many emails I sent you after you were gone?' There was a slight pause. 'I have no idea, go check my email account! Still, you didn't ask how mum was doing, how I was doing. Didn't you care about your own little sister?'
