Chapter 14

I didn't get Daniel at all. He picked me up from my house at 8 at night and when we reached L.A., oh, it's too late! We have to "wait till the morning" as he put it. What an idiot! I had a feeling he did this on purpose, whether to postpone meeting his dad or to annoy me. Whatever it was, it worked.

I did get a little huffy and Daniel pointed out that I was the one who insisted on coming along so it wasn't his fault. True. Still, I was really pissed off.

I changed into my Hello Kitty pyjamas. Don't judge. It came with a set of fluffy bedroom slippers. I did not speak to Daniel at all since reaching his house. I made my way to the guest room, locked the door and decided to go to bed early. Only I couldn't sleep early. There were noises coming from next door - Daniel's bedroom. I tried to count the chickens (or was it sheeps?) that flew across the fence but I kept losing count and had to start all over again. It wasn't helping me to sleep, it was getting me frustrated.

I glanced at the clock hanging from the wall. 11.35 p.m.. Great, the chickens in my head were bored too and were head-butting the fences. I frowned, wondering why the room was so quiet and realised the sounds coming from next door had stopped. There were light muffled footsteps outside my door but it faded away. Curiosity got the better of me (and I was way too bored anyway) so I opened the door and stuck my head out and checked the corridor. All was clear, the lights were all out. I could have sworn somebody was outside.

I took the stairs down and made my way around the house, staying very silent so as to not alarm anyone. The house was dark but I could make out the path in front of me with the moonlight that shone through the windows, lighting the place with a eerie glow.

A soft click of the front door was like a gunshot in the silence. I knew where I had to go. I hurried towards the foyer (there was definitely some shuffling noises there), maybe a little too fast, because my foot accidentally collided with the coffee table and it emitted a loud groan. Instinctively, I dove under the table and waited. The shuffling noises had ceased immediately.

I had a feeling it was a burglar in the house. Should I go get Daniel now? But he might murder me for waking him up...and I was too scared to move. I counted the seconds which seemed to go by painfully slow. A couple of minutes later, I heard a sigh of relief and the shuffling noises returned.

Stealthily, I crept from underneath the table and reached for the closest thing to me - nothing. How was it that in movies, there was always something to grab beside you, no matter how ridiculous the item was, but in real life, there was nothing to defend yourself with?

The large front door open and a beam of moonlight flashed through, illuminating the stranger's face. He looked oddly familiar. I flicked on the switches and the lights turned on.

I grew pale when I saw who it was. 'Daniel?' I said in a strangled voice. The thing that scared me was his outfit. He was wearing the same black suit he wore the other night he came stumbling into the house injured, but this time, he also had a gun in hand. I was pretty certain it wasn't a toy gun that shot darts when you pulled the trigger. The gun he was holding looked real. 'Where are you going?' I asked cautiously, eyeing the gun. I didn't dare to move in case my sudden movements startled him. I wouldn't want to lose an eyeball.

'Fischer, what are you doing out of bed?' Daniel, who at first looked really surprise, recovered from his shock and asked in a steely voice.

'What are you doing with a gun?' I asked timidly. 'What the hell are you thinking of? Daniel, are you doing what I think you're doing?'
