Chapter 18

'Becky,' Ryan knocked on the door.

'What?' I wailed, still lazing around in bed in my teddy bear pyjamas. Mum had checked on me, Dad had checked on me, now him too. Honestly, you would've thought I had been fearfully traumatised by a car crash. 'The door's not locked, but you're not welcome to invade my privacy.'

'C'mon Becky, it's 3 in the afternoon-'

'2.57,' I corrected him.

'Whatever. You've been in there since yesterday. It's Monday, you've missed school. What are you planning to do?' Ryan said and I was wondering if mum had made him come to talk to me. Ryan wasn't exactly the brotherly type of...brother.

'Go away. Can't you read the sign outside?' I mumbled into my pillow.

'"Do not disturb. Dying in process." Aw, come now sis, you can't really be that pathetic. No one is going to remember anything from Saturday's play.' Ryan tried to reason out with me.

I groaned. 'Is that so? Then why was my face on the front cover of yesterday's newspaper? High school girl got squashed!' Notice that pun right there? No kidding, I've become the butt of every joke. Everything related to pumpkins and people would refer to Rebecca Fischer. 'What do you want anyway? You're still here.'

'I'm trying to cheer you up. Obviously you're still very much upset. Even a blind man can tell. Look at you, you usually dance and sing horribly to Smashing Pumpkins- oh wait, that's dad's favourite band. Wrong one, that wasn't intentional.' Ryan quickly apologised as I growled. I knew he was being sincere in trying to make me feel better, but he was never good at it.

'Just stop!' I nearly yelled.

'What is this?' Another voice demanded.

'Nothing, mum,' I heard Ryan saying. 'She's still moping around though.'

I could imagine the look on her face - disappointment. 'Rebecca, sweetheart?' There was another knock on the door. 'I've talked to your dad and I know how we can fix all this. You never liked Maybrooks and I personally am starting to hate the place myself. If only I listened to you. We can make all this go away though, we're moving back to New York. We're leaving in a week, so pack up your things.'

I wasn't really listening, until I heard the words "New York" and I fell out of bed. 'New York?! As in New York, New York? Mum, no!' I shouted as I scrambled for the door and flung it open. Mum had already slammed the door shut to her room. 'You can't take me to New York, that's so far away!' I protested but Ryan who was still standing outside my room held me back.

'Rebecca! Wake up! You never wanted to move out of New York before, why change your mind now? You can have back your old life, none of this in Maybrooks ever happened!' Ryan said in a loud voice as he shook me by the shoulders hard, trying to put some sense into me. 'Your friends miss you. Over there, no one knows about your humiliation here. Stop struggling, it's final, we're moving! We're doing this all for you!'

'But I can't move yet!' I argued as I squirmed under his grip. 'What about-'

'Daniel? Is that what you're going to say?' Ryan frowned. 'I'm not dumb, I can tell this is more than that pumpkin incident. For get him, Becky! He's just not worth it. He's nothing more than a jerk, he never called. You think he's coming for you, well he's not! So stop trying to wait for your prince charming to come. He doesn't care about you, he's just like all the other rich guys. Just snap out of it and move on!' Sometimes Ryan could be really straightforward and harsh, but that was his way of showing he cared.
