Zack

After all the guys found random places to crash in our house or Rian and Cass’ three doors down, I walked into the boys’ room to find them all asleep. I kiss each one of them and left the room closing the door as softly as I could. I turn and walk down the hall and down the stairs. I find that the majority of the bands went to Rian’s so they wouldn’t bother the sleeping kids.  I find Phil and Jack playing a board game with Sunday. “Be careful she’ll paint your face!”

“We already have a plan; when everyone at Rian’s is plastered and passed out Cass is gonna text us and we’ll go over with Alan and going on a beauty rampage.”

“Who’s here?”

“Matty is outside on the phone with his wife, Aaron is asleep in the dining room which Alex set up like a hotel sleeping room in there, and Austin and Lucy are talking in the kitchen; Everyone else went to party. Oh and Adam went over to take photos but he’ll be back later, probably bring a couple people back too so Lucy said to leave the backdoor unlocked.”

“Cool thanks” I walked towards the kitchen and slowed to listen to Lucy and Austin talking lowly.

“So you’re saying that if I ever need anything to call?”

“I mean it Lucy I know what it’s like to be the helpless one; you’re lucky you have Zack to take care of you”

“Ya I know”

“Can I ask you something?”

“Sure Austin”

“When you were stuck on the floor with no one around what was going through your head?”

“I was so afraid and I was praying that someone would walk in and help me. The boys were kicking like crazy so I knew I was in serious trouble. They only would kick with Zack around. If you’re asking if I hated the band for taking Zack from me and blame them for the accident I’m not.  I knew what I was getting into when I let Zack back into my life and either way I would have fallen and hit my head. I don’t blame anyone”

“Does it scare you that the guys are gonna have to go on tour again?”

“No, it’s life I have to pick up and carry on with it.  I’ll have people and I guarantee you that Zack won’t let me be by myself anymore anyway. I have a question for you now”

“Ok”

“How do you keep going with everything that’s happened with you?”

“I put it all in the music, and I have the guys and the fans”

“Yea they are like a family. This one girl her friend was in a car accident and she was waiting in the hall, she happened to start talking to me without realizing who I was since I was so swollen and bandaged.  She let it slip that her friend and her we’re fans of All Time Low and that her friend wanted to go to the show real bad but they weren’t gonna release her and she decided to not go without her friend. I asked her if she had been watching twitter lately. She admitted to not leaving the hospital since the car accident. So I called Alex and had him, Rian, and Jack come to the hospital to surprise the girls. When they found out who I was they hugged me crying and thanked me. I know the guys do it for them and I could never take Zack from that.”  I walk into the kitchen to find Austin and Lucy sitting at the breakfast table a bowl of strawberries in front of them. I pretended like I hadn’t been listening. I sit next to Lucy and snag a berry.

“Hey Sweetheart you good?”

“Yeah Austin and I were just talking about the girls from the hospital”

“Cool I’m gonna go talk to Matty” I kiss her head and walk out the backdoor to find Matty sitting on the bottom step staring up at the stars.

“Yes I see the moon Bud, yes I’ll be home soon. Uncle Matty is making sure some friends are ok and then he has two more shows then I’ll come home and visit you. Ok go to bed, be good, and give the phone back to Auntie.  Hi love make sure he gets straight to bed cause my sister- Yes I love you too. I’ll tell Lucy you send love but you should come out and visit her. I love you Brit Good Night.”  He hung up the phone and turned after I sat next to him. “Matt how can you leave Brit at home and not worry about her?”

“Zack I worry about her everyday but I call her every day and send friends to make sure she’s ok the whole time I’m on tour.  Did you not listen to our song  I wrote for her? I told you to listen to it”

“I keep meaning to” He chuckles and pulls out his phone.  He scrolls through his music library clicks his album and a techno noise starts. He makes me listen to the whole song before he puts his phone in his pocket and turns to look at me.

“Zack it seems impossible but you have to know it’s for the best.  These kids need us.  You’ve read the letters, you know as well as I do how important it is. And when you get to call home it makes it special.”

“It’s impossible to hear Sunday on the phone with me asking when I’ll be home and that she misses me.  I’m terrified that since I’m never home she’ll end up like one of the kids who listen to us. Broken and I’m terrified that one day one of us is gonna open a letter and read it only to find it’s from Sunday. And when the boys get older, who’s gonna teach them to treat women correctly and not make my mistakes”

“Zack jeez you talk like you’re dying and never gonna be home not touring.  You don’t have to tour that much when the kids get older. It seems hard cause your still touring like you did when Lucy and Sunday weren’t in the picture. When Rian and Cass have kids, or Alex and Morgan, or Jack finds a girl he likes and has a kid; things will change.  It’s just because you’re the only one with kids. It’ll be ok.” I nod and he puts his arm around my shoulder reassuringly.  Austin appears in the doorway.

 “Zack um question..”

“What’s wrong? Where’s Lucy?” I jump up and start to walk past Austin.

“Whoa pull the brakes there Superman Lucy’s fine.  The question is about Sunday.” I started to try and push past him again “DUDE chill! Not everything is always bad. My question’s is whether or not she’s allowed to be coloring Tino’s whole face with a sharpie while Adam videotapes? I tried asking Lucy but she’s laughing too hard to give me a straight answer.”

“Well it seems as if were missing out on all the fun” Matty says laughing. We walk into the formal room to find a chaotic scene that made even me laugh.  Lucy was bent over in the doorway bursting with laughter as Sunday and Alan used industrial sharpies to color Tino’s face.  Aaron had a giant squidgy drawn on his face and a murderous look on his face as he chased Phil around the room as he weaved in and out of all the cots laughing so hard I don’t know how he was able to stay away from Aaron.  Jack was laughing so hard I’m surprised he hadn’t busted a gut, he was jumping up and down on our table with a collection of sharpies in his hands or hanging from my past tour laments that normally were in the top drawer in the kitchen.  Adam was videotaping and as if the chaos wasn’t enough Josh ran into the house plastered and tossed a water balloon at Lucy.  I reached out and grabbed his arm.  Lucy stopped laughing and a murderous look crossed her face causing everyone in the room to stop whatever they were doing and freeze.  Adam turns the camera towards us.  Calmly Lucy begins to speak, “Josh you have ten seconds of a head start and then I’m running after you and if I catch you… You do whatever I say for the rest of the time you’re here no questions asked.”  Being the confident fool he is Josh sized Lucy up and slurred the word  “Deal”

“Awesome ok Zack let him go but the boys room is off limits.  Adam you might wanna get more camera chips cause this week just got more fun.” I let go of Josh and he took off.  Lucy counted to ten and then ran after him.
