Breakfast

On this brisk summer morning I wake to my mum shouting me to the kitchen. Down the narrow hallway I go to see a breakfast fit for a king laying there on the table.
So I'm like "Mum, are you kidding?"
She's like "what? You don't like it? Is it the tomatoes? They're there for flavour, Jake!" I have no idea what she's talking about at this point, I like tomatoes. I call them 'clown noses' because... Well, I'm about as grown up as my little brother, Felix. Probably less so.
"Mum! I love it, chill out!" I say laughing. She's always been like this, always pampered me and Felix until the point where we occasionally become disappointed when we're not treat like god's gift. But that's mum's fault really. She's called Gina, and like her name, her job is boring too. My mum is the head of the Candor Guard, the building's police so to speak. I know what you're thinking, 'that sounds badass!', well, if you call sitting behind a desk badass then I'd hate to be you. I know my mum could be really doing something that mattered to the safety of our city, like the Dauntless. Now they are badass! But I don't hold it against her, if that's her style then fair enough, she can do what she likes but she knows I'm the kinda guy who'd want to be in the thick of the action. But at 16 that's hard to do.

"Glad you like it hun, need you nice and full for the choosing ceremony today!" She says softly to me with a peck on my cheek.
"And don't worry, your choice won't effect my love for you..."
She already knows I picked Dauntless and that's what I'm going to choose. We're Candor, I pretty much have to tell her. But she knows that my devotion to my family won't change, I'll always do my best for them.
"I know mum. And it won't effect my love for you and Felix. But he is a bit of an asswipe." I say with a sarcastic smile on my face. She gives me a look and leaves me to my breakfast.

Toast with bacon, egg and tomato. Just like dad used to do it, not as good though. I've missed his breakfasts, he was a great cook. If you're wondering what the hell happened to my dad, he was killed by the Factionless. Tony was his name. His murder was a big thing in our city, stirred up a load of problems between factions, but it was a good few years ago now and everything has settled down. The Factionless are off the hook. The two culprits had some mental issues, hence why they were kicked out of their Faction. They were both put in prison and later killed themselves in their cells. Not too many are sure how, but they're gone now and there's nothing to be done, Mum, Felix and I get along just fine.

After my breakfast, I get dressed in our boring-ass Faction's black trousers and white shirt and Mum, my little brother and I all take the bus to the Choosing Ceremony.
