The crowd applause, and the Dauntless howl. They stand and pump their firsts chanting "Dauntless! Dauntless! Dauntless!"
I embrace their boisterous nature, stick my hand in the air and yell. As I sit down, after being congratulated by a Dauntless member on the front row, I look over to my mum who's giving me a wide smile. I'm lucky to have such an understanding mother, most would be disappointed or feel abandoned, Candor or not. After all names have been called and Andrew finishes, the Dauntless are first up, climbing over chairs, and themselves, to get out of the double doors to the left of them. Everything is too chaotic to even get a look back at my mum and Felix, it will be a long time until I see them again. If I ever do.
We all take the stairs down, people slide and jump over railings while yelling. I race with them, panting heavier with each flight of stairs we descend. We burst outside and take to the streets and head towards the rail tracks. But they're about 30 foot in the air. The first bunch of Dauntless begin to climb the scaffolding like trained monkeys. I follow them and take my first hand on the cool metal beams, and progress upwards. Someone to the right of me with red hair falls and lands with a grunt and a scrape on her leather jacket. Dauntless born... That must have been embarrassing for her. She gets up and shrugs it off as if nothing happened. And there I am staring at her, worrying for her wellbeing. I linger on the metal supports and stare blankly, she looks back at me and goes "what?!" While flinging her arms up. I just turn my head back and concentrate on the next beam my hand will cling to.
When I've reached the top a gust of wind nearly takes me to serious injury, or my death. But a delicate hand grabs my arm to steady me. An Abnegation transfer, that's strange. An Abnegation born hasn't transferred to Dauntless since Tris Prior, Andrew Prior's daughter. She's pretty well known around the city for exposing Jeanine Matthews of her plot. She basically saved the city and the whole Abnegation faction as we know it. Anyway, this girl's like "are you okay? That was close!" With what seems like way too much enthusiasm. But I just say "yeah, I'm good. Thank you."
"You're very welcome." She replies with a broadened smile. She seems nice. Before I can come to an initial judgement on this girl the train whizzes past. All Dauntless born naturally match the trains speed and so this girl and I follow suit. I just make it onto the second to last car following the girl, who seems surprisingly athletic, and I slump down by the car door next to her.
"Hello again," she begins "I'm Frankie."
