As we drove to the funeral, I had such a strange sense of imminent freedom. It was as if someone had just informed me, "Eve Miller you've served your sentence. You're being released today." It didn't bring me relief or joy. I looked out the car window. The snow was plowed into dirty, snow banks at every corner. It was an ugly, gray day. I shook my head and tears filled my eyes. It was all starting to make sense to me. I could see that a person with their freedom couldn't understand my life.
I never wanted to be free.
