Recap:
"Sorry, I must have mistaken you for someone else. You look a lot alike." And with an attitude as cold as his eyes, he walked away from her. He walked away from the girl he waited so long to see again.
"Wait! Lucas, right? I used to call you Luke."
"Sorry, like I said before, I must have mistaken you for someone else. My name is James, not Lucas."
"Oh... I suppose I was mistaken too. Sorry about the extra confusion." But deep deep down, Sawyer knew that the brown haired boy was James Lucas Coffland and she was determined to repair their lost friendship.

Deep deep down, Lucas knew who the blonde girl was, but he was too afraid to admit it. Even though they only knew each other for a day, it was long enough for him to remember her and wait for her arrival for 14 years. He didn't want to get close to her because he knew he wasn't good for her, he had changed a lot in 14 years.
Lucas shakes his head and proceeds to walk into his first class, AP Psychology, leaving a very confused Calum behind him. Lucas already knew he would have some explaining to do for his friend.
The thing about Lucas was that he didn't ever really think things through before he did them. It was a trait that he had acquired over the 14 years Sawyer wasn't in his life. This explains why he has had two misdemeanors and it also explains the little scenario that happened no longer than five minutes ago. If he had thought things through then maybe he could have avoided it. Now Lucas knows for sure that Sawyer knows who he is and that she will probably try to find him again. What he didn't know was when he walked into class, he would see the very same girl he wanted to avoid as much as possible.
Lucas walked into class right before the bell rang, right after Sawyer had run into class with Declan, right when he spotted the blonde girl with the brightest smile on her face because of a boy. A boy that was not him. And for some reason, that sight made him slightly uncomfortable as he sat down in his seat. However, Lucas didn't have much time to ponder on the feeling because the psychology teacher had just walked in.
"Good Morning class, I'm sure you have noticed, but I am obligated to announce that we have a new student. Riley, please come up to the front and introduce yourself if you don't mind."
Lucas sees Sawyer visibly cringe at her first name and he smiles at the sight. It was enough to give him hope that he was still the only one who got to call her Sawyer.
"Hey guys, I'm" she cringes, "Riley Greene, and I hope that this will be a good year to end my high school career with." She walks back with an uncomfortable expression knowing that the entire school will soon know her as Riley, not Sawyer, and that made Lucas smile knowing she didn't forget the promise they made 14 years ago. It is the same reason why everyone still calls him James.
As she was about to sit down, she looks up and smiles again. She spots Lucas. She waves and sits down with an animated expression which shocks not only her new friend, but the entire class including the teacher. But he starts the lesson, taking time away from anyone who wanted to wonder about how they knew each other.
Lucas was shocked at the action. He couldn't speak or pay attention to the lesson today, which he knew was going to come back and bite him in the arse. She knew who he was, and if she was anything like she was 14 years ago, Lucas knew that she wouldn't stop trying until he admits that he was her Luke from all those years ago. Before he had realized, the bell had rung and when he came back to earth, there was a blonde girl waiting in front of him.
"Hey Luke, do you know how to get to the Spanish 4 classroom?"
"My name isn't Luke, but yeah, it's my next class."
"Great! It's mine too so we can walk together. And I already know your name is Luke so no need to hide it."
"Actually Riley, his name is James...I think it's best if I show you the way. I don't mind being late to class, plus this would actually give me an excuse too so.." Lucas and Sawyer both turn their heads and see that it was the boy Sawyer was smiling with earlier, Declan Anderson.
"Oh, it really won't bother him. I know his name is James, he's actually someone I know from when I used to live here."
"Riley, I really think you should just come with m--"
"Look dude, I can take 'Riley' to her next class okay? You don't have to worry about her. It's not like I'm gonna kill her, and like she said, we know each other." Lucas interrupts Declan with a stony look in his eye, Declan received the message.
"Oh, okay Riley. I'll see you in 5th period I guess.." And he ran out the door faster than Usain Bolt ever could.
"Thanks Luke, and now that I got you to admit it, do you still live in the same house as you used to? Because I'm pretty sure I'm your neighbor." And with that Sawyer happily skipped out the door and to the left.
"Wrong way, Greene." Lucas said as he turned to the right on the way to spanish. Riley stopped her movements, turned and ran to catch up with her old friend.
"Heh.." She smiled up at him. She noticed a lot changed within 14 years, she had anticipated it but didn't think it would be this drastic. He had a tired look in his eyes that no one could notice until they got a really good look at him. His eyes were so much bluer now than they were when he was 5. All she could think was that puberty did him well, but she knew something was wrong. The tired look has been there for quite a while, and she wanted to be the one to change that.
After many many long turns, Lucas stops walking and he finally says something.
"Look, I admit that we knew each other a long time ago. But a lot has changed, you're not the same and I sure as he.ll am not the same either, okay? So let's stop pretending like we are just going to pick up from where we left off because the truth is, we only knew each other for a day, so there isn't really much to pick up from is there." Lucas goes into the classroom they were standing outside of, leaving Sawyer confused and disappointed. She really thought things were going to go well between them. What life changing event had Luke experienced while she was gone?
______________________________
Hey! I know right now the story line doesn't seem to make much sense because she was gone for 14 years, a lot would have changed but she's expecting that nothing happened to him within 5110 days. But she is pretty much still the same person, so she didn't expect for him to change so much. Her life has been the same for 14 years: move into a new town, leave two years later. She has never had many friends because she always knew she was just going to leave two years later, so she's really excited to be back where she at least knows one person. So don't call her dense because she just wants a sense of permanence in her life, she wants Luke to be exactly the same because she's hoping that he will be like an anchor for her.
