His house was dimly lit and warm. We all gathered around the large dinner table surrounding the large feast Mrs. Espinosa prepared for us.

As delicious as the food looked and smelled, I had no desire to eat at all. My stomach already felt full and my limbs felt heavy.

"Thank you both for coming," Mrs. Espinosa smiled. "Where's your husband?" I watched as my mother's smile disappeared.

"We're not together any more," she sighed. I could see how sad she was. It kills me knowing that she has no idea why my father wanted a divorce.

"I don't mean to be rude, but why are you guys separated?" Matt's father questioned. Matthew looked up at me as if he knew something. "No idea," Mom sighed.

"Well don't you know, Summer?" Matthew said bluntly.

"N-no," I said then stuffed my mouth with a bite of food.

"Oh no, that's ridiculous," Mother laughed, "If she knew I'm sure she would tell me." Her words cut into me like a knife.

"Hmm," the boy hummed, "something sure does sound ridiculous."  He looked up at me and took a large bite of food.

I needed to get out of the house, but leaving would be selfish. Mother looked so happy when she told me we were invited to dinner, and I couldn't possibly force her to leave so soon.

The tension at the dinner table was unbearable.
"So, how's school been to you Summer?" Mrs. Espinosa said in attempt to spark up conversation.

"I-it's b-better," I replied.

"Ah," she sighed, "sounds good."

"Well, this has been great, but I'm finished here so I'll be leaving," Matthew pushed back his chair and stood up.

"Matt! Don't be rude," Mr. Espinosa scolded, "Sit down keep our guests company." Matthew rolled his eyes and slouched back into his chair.

It felt like my skin was on fire and my chest was caving in. I was only here for a little while, but it felt like hours. "I-I need t-to use the r-restroom," I said as I stood up. My vision became blurry and it felt as if the world was shaking. Then, everything went black.
