District 1
-----------
Alexis Topaz
Sun streamed through the window of my small bedroom, momentarily blinding me as my eyes blinked open. A silver tray with tiny fire-breathing creatures engraved around the side held a plate of breakfast for me. Today it was freshly baked bread with butter oozing over it, a large apple, and a glass of milk - a small reminder that today was reaping day. I sat up, my dirty blonde hair winding itself around my face. I shook it away, scraping it back into a temporary messy ponytail. My mind whirred; today's the day. The one day that could shape my future. I sighed heavily, and reached over my almost-pristine white sheets to the plate, and hooked my fingers around the apple. I opened my mouth, and crunched down on the sweet flesh of the apple. I heard a knock on my door - three hard knocks and a soft one - the knock of my older brother, Patrick. "Come in" I muffled through the apple, and he pushed the door open. His tall and muscular figure, one that enchanted the girls from his old school, appeared by my bedside. He kissed my forehead lightly with his soft lips, and ruffled my locks. I returned the gesture, my apple hanging limply in my grasp. "Be strong" he said, his soft attitude turning to dust, though if you looked close enough, you could see a slight tear welling at his misty grey eyes. "I know you can win it, so volunteer. This is what you have been training for, Lexy. It doesn't matter what you have to do. You have to get that spot. And don't let the other girls get in your way; especially not that Arabella Harkins"
Arabella was, by far, the most horrible girl ever in the history of people. She was mean, ruthless, and wort of all, she was ginormous. Something happened to her as a kid, a freak accident of some sort, but ever since... She had been rather abnormal, with almost super-strength. Many bruises had been planted upon my by her rough hands, but I always got back up, wiping blood and dust off my hands. Patrick sat by my bed until I had finished my small breakfast, then left me to get ready. I locked the door after him, sliding my back down against it. It took me a moment to compose myself before pulling out my reaping clothes. A cream blouse with an elaborate ruby design weighing down the front covered my chest, and a simple navy skirt hung around my waist, blowing against my knees in the slight wind whistling from the window. I stride over to the mirror with my hairbrush and stroke through it 100 times. I tie it into a high pony-tail, clasping a ruby dragonfly clip over my fringe to the top of my head, making it smooth and round. Lastly, I pull a jade pendant out of my draw. I drape it around my neck, and state at my reflection. My green eyes close slowly. I take a breath and pull myself away from this farmhouse face. This may be the last time I see myself - my normal self.
My mother and father are waiting for me downstairs. A small smile plays on my fathers lips, as he gives me a hug. I can tell he is sad. They both are, every reaping day. Mother can't hold in her tears though, and she has to get a handkerchief. I haven't even been reaped yet! I sit down with my parents and brother in the lounge, and find a small box sitting on the table. I reach over to it, stroking it's velvety ribbon. "Not yet" father says, guiding my hand away. I laugh, hair bouncing around in it's hairtie.
The Mayor's speech is long, and boring, so of course I soon get impatient. I whisper words of nervousness and excitement to the girl next to me - my friend Tristiana. She has agreed to not volunteer against me as she does not care much for the games. She would rather read a book. I am not sure why. My face lights up, though, when Luxie Gem finally steps back on stage. She has wound her long hair into a crown somehow whilst Mayor Jargleswood spoke, and it compliments her long face nicely. She reminds me of a fairy-tail creature - a nymph. Mother and Father used to read to Patrick and I tales with nymphs in them. And fairies, witches, werewolves; but all those characters were obviously untrue. My attention flicks back to Luxie, as she proceeds to pull the girls name out of the bowl. I close my eyes, getting ready to volunteer. "And the female tribute is... Alexis Topaz"
