District 1

Alexis Topaz

I heave a sigh of relief. The cornucopia is on my side of the arena. Across the canyon, to my left, stands Caspian. To my right, on the same side of the canyon as me, stands the girl from 7. I look around for the rest of the career tributes. I spot Margo on the same side as Caspian, where snow is falling. Alex and Rex are on my side. I look behind me and see a small wall of sand, with black dots scurrying about. Harmless insects I think, and close my eyes. He burning sun beats down on me, making me perspire through the thin layer of shirt I am wearing. It is white, so I don't absorb the warmth, but the boys are not as lucky. I see that some of them are panting heavily. Margo wipes falling snow over her face. '10' My eyes fall to the cornucopia. It holds lots of weapons... Lots of swords and knives for us, thank god, and a small trident lodged in the side of the heap. I see a few backpacks which probably contain valuable items - food, possibly some water bottles and special items. '9' Penny Dilla's voice rings out over the arena, loud and strong. '8' I comb my fingers through my dirty-blonde hair which is tied up in a high ponytail, military-style. '7' I move into a stance which I can run from, like we practiced in training. '6' I take a deep breath in. '5' Exhale. '4' Inhale. '3' Exhale. '2' I look up at my target - the sturdiest-looking bag, next to a throwing knife. '1'

I sprint into the chaos, not looking anywhere but my bag. I reach it pretty quickly, and sling it over my shoulder. I gather up a few knives, and stick them under my belt. A boy, from 9 I think, runs at me with a little sword he picked up. I throw a knife at him, his Yin Yang symbol acting as a target. He reels over, dropping the sword as he falls face-first into the ground. I pick up the sword and look around. I see a few dead tributes - the girl and boy from 5, the girl from 8 and the boy from 11. Alex jogs over to me. "Hey" he grunts, handing me one of three bags he has with him. "Stuff it and let's go." I unzip both the bag he gave me and my one, and stuff in as I can find, including a sleeping bag and vial of strange-looking liquid. I hear a yell from the other side of the canyon. I see Margo peering down, laughing. I think she just pushed someone down. "C'mon!" Alex yells to me from the other side of the cornucopia. He is with Rex, who holds a lot of weapons.

I jog over to them and we set off towards the sand-dune wall. The ants crawl over it. "Jump" I command the boys. They shoot me a puzzled look. "They're just ants..." Rex explains. I roll my eyes. "Really? In the Hunger Games? Nothing's ever as it seems" I imply, and take a few steps back. I run at the wall and jump over it. My toe skims the surface, and a couple of ants attack my shoe. I stamp them into the ground. "Come on" I say, bored. "Lets find a way to get to the others. And maybe kill some other tributes." We walk out of the cornucopia area, and walk into the unknown.

This is it. This is the moment to prove that I'm still in the Games. After my complete failure at the Tribute Parade, even the smallest and weakest tributes have underestimated me.  Not for too long though.  The arena is the most important part of the Games. The tube lifted me up into a sandy pit.  I took in my surroundings. The first thing I noticed was the heat. Oh god it's insufferable. I quickly realised the layout. The area around this pile of sand is split into 2,where one half has palm trees, the other, pine trees. Straight up ahead lay the Cornucopia's silver body in the middle of the sane dunes.  "Let the Games begin! May the odds be ever in your favour!" The Game-maker called out from her comfortable headquarters somewhere in the Capitol.  In that moment I took a deep breath. I need to concentrate if I'm going to win. As they groomed and prepared me for the games,I had noticed my mind heading down unwanted directions. What if I die in the Arena? What if I never get to go home? What if I never find love? I mean,I don't want to fall in love. But someday,I hope to experience why all these other people (especially girls) go crazy in their search of it. It's fascinating really. What people would do out of love.
