District 1

------------

Alexis Topaz

A whimper escapes my mouth.

After stopping for the night in a bushy area, we woke up to find the bushes around us on fire.

But this isn't normal fire - nothing is ever normal in the games. This fire was black and white, probably symbolizing something. We weren't too worried at first. But then it started closing in on us. Soon we were stood in a huddle in the middle of the fire, as it slowly crept towards our bodies.

I look up. There is a parachute, gracefully floating into my hand. On it is just a note, with only two words. And they are not words that I want to have written on a sponsor note.

'Kill him'

Luckily, Rex and Alex don't see the parachute, so I throw it into the flames. The black and white fire roars loudly and engulfs it, still looking hungry. It keeps advancing. The boys both turn to face me, and I mumble something about testing the strength. They turn back to face the flames.

Slowly, I pull a knife out of my bag, which is slung loosely on one shoulder. I start to shake. I can't do this. I can't just kill my district partner, and Margo would definitely kill me if I got rid of Rex. My breathing got heavier and I closed my eyes. And when I opened them, I whipped round and thrusted my hand out into somebody's back. They crumple to the ground, yelling in pain, and only then do I realize that I have killed him. Alex.

The cannon sounded.

Alex.

Alex.

I killed him.

That is when I start to scream. Rex grabs my arms and holds them behind my back - a simple self defense move, but it keeps me from doing anything stupid. He pushes me to the ground, away from Alex, and I fall. I notice that the fire has disappeared. So that is what Pinocchio meant. I had to kill him to be set free. The whirring of the hovercraft came after a moment, so I scramble shakily to my feet and kissed Alex on the cheek. "I'm sorry" I whisper, a tear forming on my cheek. I wipe it away and stand up. I take a big breath, and hide behind a tree, as Rex is doing. The hovercraft comes, and it takes Alex away from us.

Rex and I keep walking, back to the cornucopia. We survey the remains - there isn't much left. I find a half empty drink bottle, and press it to my lips, only then realizing how much my throat is burning. I look at the canyon. It is too wide to jump, and seems to be a crack throughout the whole arena. I start to wonder where Margo and Caspian are, when I hear a high-pitched shriek in the distance. I just hope it's not her. Or him. I shake my head, the thought of Caspian having a yell that high pitched makes me laugh slightly. It's probably just hysterics. I call for Rex to watch my back, and I hear a grunt that probably means 'sure', so I get on my knees and look over the edge. It's a drop that I can't even see the bottom of. I find a rock a little way away from me, and drop it into the canyon. I don't hear a thump, but I do hear a crack. I try to make out what it was, because I'm sure it came from the canyon. And it did. Because when I stare down at the black pit, I notice a wooden bridge, running across it. And now, thanks to that rock, there is a large hole in it.

I grab Rex's arm, and pull him down a little hill, around some trees, and through a little tunnel. Somehow I just know where to go. And when we emerge, we are standing in front of a wooden bridge, that looks like it couldn't hold much more than Rex's weight.

"We're going to have to be careful" I state, staring at our pathway to a whole new arena.
