Chapter 8
I calm myself down when I see Damien walk through the front doors of the diner with Jake following closely behind.
"Is that Jeb Nick's after?" Damien asks his face twisted with worry.
"Yup," I said smiling.
"How did Jeb find us? How did he know to follow us to get to you?" Damien asked confused.
"It's simple. Jeb has connections all over the place. Just like how you hide in the shadows, Jeb's people hides deeper in the shadows. It's as if they are the shadows, watching my every move. He would've found me eventually anyways. But that's not the only thing that tipped him off. The fact that Kile didn't return with me that night was what set his alarms off. He had his people search the whole area and found your house. Figured you would have known where I went. Then they saw you guys and followed you here on a very slim chance that they would find me. And that ends up with you being here and Jeb out there. Nick led the bastard right to me.... idiot."
I read Damien's mind. He looks at me suspiciously but angry. He wants to know how I know all this.
"Why don't you just accept his love and move on. God he's risking his life for you! He came all the way here to see you and you don't care if he dies?!" He yelled angrily.
"Jeeze... You sound like you should be his girlfriend. Listen, I can't accept his love, in order to do that, I have to love him back, which I don't. And I have to trust him, all relationships revolve around trust, without that, there's nothing."
I look over at Jake for the first time since coming here. He looks at me closely and quietly with his watchful green eyes.... And then he smirks at me as his mind lights up with realization. Finally, someone figures it out.
"I think all you guys should come and watch this fight... It'll be worth it." I said smirking while walking out the door.
I walk up the street with the other four behind me, to the park where I see Jeb jump back to avoid Nick's kick. While Jeb is steading himself, Nick runs forward and punches Jeb in the face with air blades almost invisible to the average human eye, protruding from between his finger in his curled up fist. Nick jumps back to avoid a counter attack from Jeb while Jeb wipes his face from the blood. Looking at the side of Jeb's face there are four small holes that rapidly begin to bleed again.
Jeb decides to make the next move and instead of a head on attack, he goes for the elemental power and lifts up the dirt behind Nick, shaping it into a sharp blade. Quicker than I could have imagined he struck the dirt blade through Nick's left leg and it protruded out the front, right under his knee. He screams out in pain and stops himself soon after and grits his teeth to stop the noise from waking up the other people in the town.
I look over at the two diner employees to see Max with a look of awe and excitement while Ms. Red Head had a look of disgust and horror. Damien and Jake's minds light up, realizing the difference between me and Nick. They finally figure out that we aren't normal; we wield amazing powers beyond words. But they still don't know about the mind reading or how we can sense others presence.
I smile to myself. Good one Jeb. Taking out his leg would slow him down. It was effective and not that noticeable to bystanders. Nick removed the dirt from his leg and charges at Jeb with a very noticeable limp. Jeb sees that Nick is planning a powerful attack head on and prepares a shield out of first wind than fire. Oh, now I see he's getting serious. He doesn't care what the bystanders see now. Thankfully most people were still asleep because it was still early in the morning.
Nick comes to a halt about a few meters from the ball of fire surrounding Jeb. Obviously Jeb can't see behind the ball of fire and he can't read minds, so Nick takes this as an opportunity. Nick can't attack head on now or else he'll get burned. The fact that Jeb can't read minds is a huge disadvantage in this fight. I don't bother reading Nick's mind to see what he’ll do. I want to see how smart and strong Nick really is.
