Ky's POV:
Newt and I enjoy a quick breakfast of plain toast and eggs together, then head our separate ways. Newt limps back to the Homestead to rest, and I go to the Map Room to get my gear. Minho is already there, ready for the day's run. I walk in, put on my pack and runners shoes, and look at yesterday's maps. Minho just stands in the corner, watching.
I start to walk out the door, but Minho speaks up.
"Ky. Wait. I need to talk to you."
I turn, "yeah?"
Minho motions me over to where he's standing. He places a hand tentatively on my shoulder.
"Listen. I know you like Newt."
I gulp. "Yeah?"
"And I also know that Newt is falling head over heels for you, as well."
I smile. "Uh-huh."
"And I, I just want you to be careful."
I give Minho a confused look.
"Why?"
Minho looks around, leans in, and whispers, "Because...well, just make sure you use protection."
I shove Minho away from me, spinning around and storming out.
"KLUNKHEAD", I yell angrily as I slam the door behind me.
I release a growl under my breath and take off into the maze. I run my anger and frustration off for a few hours, then stop to take a break. I lean against the wall, panting and cradling my injured arm in my hand. I slide to the ground and reach into my pack, pulling out the ham and cheese sandwich and carrots. I stuff it all in my mouth in unapologetically messy bites and down it all with a swig from my green water bottle. Then, I begin to run again.
I'm about halfway back to the glade, when I hear a shriek from close behind me. I swivel around, searching for whatever it was that made that awful noise. Seeing nothing, I uneasily turn and keep running.
I turn the corner, and in front of me, stands a huge, bulbous creature. It's skin is slimy and smelly. The monster has random protrusions sticking out, all over its body.
Griever.
My heart jumps in my chest. I scream and sprint as fast as I can in the opposite direction. I hear a click, then a rolling sound as the Griever takes chase after me. I look over my shoulder and see that the Griever is gaining on me. I push myself to my limit, running faster than I ever have before. A rock goes unseen in front of me and sends me sprawling across the stony ground. The Griever screeches in victory and raises its stinger menacingly. I whimper, praying that something will happen. Anything.
In slow motion, the Griever brings down its stinger, closer and closer. Suddenly, my body flies into action. I roll to the side, narrowly missing the sharp needle. The monster lets out a frustrated howl as I jump to my feet.
I take a few steps, then feel a tug on my shirt. The Griever rips me back, pulling me into its slimy body.
"LET ME GO!" I scream.
The Griever lets me go.
But before I can react, it's needle pierces my skin. I look down at the bubble of blood that has appeared on my arm in shock. I look back up to see that the Griever is gone, its mission accomplished.
My watch says that the doors close in 7 minutes. I try to run forward, but my legs don't work, and I trip, falling to the ground again.
I shakily stand to my feet, all adrenaline from before, disappearing. I run for a couple shaky steps, but end up collapsing to the ground again. I crawl over to the turn ahead, and see the doors of the glade beginning to close.
"No! Help", I croak.
No one hears me. The venom is already coursing through my veins.
"Ky!" says a voice from ahead.
My back arches as another ripple of pain goes through me. I can't stop the scream of agony that escapes my lips. Through my blurry vision, I see Newt, Minho, and Thomas standing at the doors. Minho and Thomas are holding back Newt from running into the maze.
"No! Ky!" Newt wails, slumping over as the doors bang closed.
I'm trapped in the maze at night, is the last thing I think before the Griever's poison takes control.
