22-New Friend

Ky's POV:

"Welcome to the Glade, Madison", I flourish my hand and bow, dramatically.

Madison shyly waves, turning in a half circle to see the group of Gladers who have gathered around again. I smile.

I like her already!

"So, I'll have Chuck show you to your hammock", Alby speaks up, pointing to the chubby little kid.

Madison gulps nervously.

"Actually....can you do it?" she asks, turning back to me.

My smile grows even bigger.

"Sure thing, sis", I say, looking for Alby's approval. He gives an irritated nod and motions for her to follow me.

"Tomorrow, Alby will give you the tour of the Glade", I say.

"The....Glade?" Madison asks, confused.

"Oh, sorry", I chuckle. "I forget the greenies don't know anything. This is the Glade. The walls protect us....well, you'll learn all this tomorrow", I say.

With Madison's hammock in hand, I lead her to the area where we all sleep.

"I will put you by Thomas", I say, setting up her hammock.

"Is that the cute one with the brown hair?" she asks.

I look at her surprised.

"Yeah! Do you like him?"

She blushes a little.

"Well, I don't really know him....but he's cute and he seems nice..."

I grin.

"He is nice. Don't worry, I'll make sure you two meet. Maybe I can convince him to give you the tour tomorrow."

Madison's face lights up like a firework show.

"Really?!" she asks, grinning from ear to ear.

"Yeah, sure thing, sis!" I say. She smiles wider at the nickname.

I finish tightening the rope on the hammock, pulling my weight on it to make sure it's secure.

"Okay, your hammock is set up!" I say, motioning extravagantly and backing up a little so she can see.

"Thank you....um, I never caught your name?"

"Oh! I'm sorry, my name is Ky", I say.

"Nice to meet you Ky, and thank you for being so nice to me and for setting up my hammock."

"No problem, sis", I reply.

Madison smiles again and sits down on her hammock, swinging a little. I lean my back against a tree, waiting for her to settle in so I can continue getting to know her. My eyes flit over to the entrance of the maze and then to the Gardens where Newt is helping Zart dig up some potatos. When I turn back to Madison to tell her to look at Zart's ass, I see she has fallen asleep.

"Well, I guess I'll just leave you alone then", I whisper, smiling to myself.

"Nice job with the new Greenie", a coarse voice says from behind me.

My smile disappears and my face pales. I start to shake as I turn to face Gally.

"Get away from me", I say, pointing at him.

"Nah, I don't think I will. I think I'm gonna stay right here", he says, stepping closer.

"Please", I whisper. "Leave me alone."

Gally smirks. I whimper as Gally takes another step towards me. Suddenly, he reaches out and grabs my wrist roughly. I scrunch my face in pain and bite my lip, whimpering again.

"Oh, what's wrong? Am I hurting you?" Gally sneers.

"Please, let go!" I beg, trying to pry his fingers off my wrist.

Gally smacks me in the face. I gasp in shock, and cup my face with my free hand. As I turn to face him, Gally presses his lips against mine roughly. My eyes widen. I bite his lip hard and scream.

Gally curses and stumbles back, touching his bleeding lip tentatively. Suddenly, he falls to the ground, unconscious. My mouth drops open.

Madison stands there with a large rock in her hand.

"No one messes with my new sister", she shouts triumphantly.

"Thank you", I say, slumping down.

Tears rush down my face as racking sobs consume my body. Madison rushes to me and kneels down, grabbing my hands in hers.

"Are you okay?" she asks, worried.

"No, I'm not okay", I admit.

"Why? What's wrong?" Madison's green eyes shine with worry.

"I can't....I can't tell you", I mumble, looking down.

"Hey, yes you can. You can tell me anything", she says.

I nod slowly, getting to my feet. I sniffle and wipe my tear-stained face on my shirt.

"Okay, I don't want anyone else to overhear, so follow me", I say quietly.

I lead her into the deadheads, and she follows quietly. We reach my tree and I sit down at the base. Madison follows suit. We sit in silence for a moment, then all at once, everything spills out and I tell her everything that Gally did.

She stares in shock for a moment.

"What did you do to cope?" she asks, as if she already knew.

"I...I, uh...", I stop.

Looking away, I pull up my sleeve.

I hear a gasp from Madison.

"Ky!"

I except her to tell me I'm crazy, but instead, Madison leans over and gives me a hug.

"I'm so sorry", she says, squeezing me tightly.

"That's not all", I say, standing up.

I take in a deep breath, then inch my pants down so she can see the cuts on my legs as well.

Her swimming green eyes reflect my pain.

"Oh, Ky..." she says, sadly.

I pull my pants back up.

"Yeah", I say. "That's how I coped."
