After the stop at the hospital, we drove down to Shayne and I's favorite restaurant.
"Reservation for Payne?" I asked the girl by the door.
"This way sir." She said politely and led us to the back.
"Thank you." I told her. I pulled out Shayne's chair and went to my side. We ordered our food and a comfortable silence engulfed us.
"Liam..." She started. I can sense the tone in her voice, and I know it's coming.
"No. Please, Shayne. Let's just enjoy this." I begged. I'm in denial, I know that. I don't want to accept it even though she's finally over this stage. "Do you remember this place? This is where I proposed to you on our one year anniversary." I gave her a loving smile. I heard her sigh and I know she's hurting just as I am.
"I was the happiest that night, Liam. Well, next to the night I told you I was pregnant." She smiled at me, the smile that shows off her dimples. I was about to say something but our food came. We ate in silence, just enjoying the food and each other's company.
I remembered when it was our first anniversary. I woke up really early and made her breakfast in bed. I treated her like a queen and I was a slave. Well, I treat her like a princess everyday. And by the end of the night, I proposed to her in this exact location. Same restaurant, same food, same table, but different scenario.
Shayne and I are walking by the beach, she insisted, just enjoying the relaxing sound of the waves and the peaceful breeze.
"Liam..." Shayne spoke. "I love you so much..." Her voice cracked. "I really do... And I'm sorry for hurting you like this. If I could change my fate, then I would. I will change the fact that I'm sick, that my time on Earth is counted."
"It's not your fault. Please, stop blaming yourself." I said as I hugged her from the back. "I love you so much. Don't you wanna try to give the treatment a shot? Maybe it'll make a difference." I pleaded, trying to change her mind at the last minute.
"You and I both know it's too late, Liam. You and I both know I don't like fooling around. We just have to accept it. YOU just have to accept it."
"Just because you already accepted it doesn't mean I can, too. It's not easy." I paused. "You're the best thing that has ever happened to me, Shayne. I can't bear the fact that I might lose you any moment." I buried my head on her hair as tears fell from my eyes. "I don't want to lose you. I don't, I can't." I mumbled.
"I'm so sorry..." I felt her shaking and I know she's crying. "I'm sorry, Liam."
"Is it really too late to change your mind?" I asked silently.
"I wish I was as strong as you, Liam. I wish I can believe in the treatment like you can, but I'm not you. I'm not strong. I don't want to take it and be disappointed when it didn't work." She faced me and said with so much passion dancing in her eyes. "Just please know that I love you so much." She added tiredly, and kissed me.
"Let's go back home." I told her.
