The dark grey clouds gathering above was worrying.

The weatherman had said nothing about rain today, but the ominous sky said otherwise.

I quickened my pace, practically running through the empty streets. The bookstore wasn't a long way away from my house - approximately twenty minutes by foot.

I hummed as I walked matching my pace to the beat of the song that was playing through my earphones. The dark sky had an immediate effect on my music genre. People don't usually notice how heavily the weather affects them, and their moods. Everyone is slightly more depressed when it's gloomy out, and more fun and outgoing when it's bright and sunny.
Since I tended to be depressed, the dark just amplified it. The singer croaked out another verse of how sad he was that his girl left him, and how she had ruined his life, and yet, he still wanted her back.

I reached the store, the bell above the door jingling as I entered. It was a cozy little place, just off the main road so we had a steady stream of customers. the floor was wooden and creaked under weight, with shelves to match. I inhaled the musky smell of worn leather and old yellowing paper.

"Thank god you showed up!" Kara, one of my co-workers, muttered, shedding her shirt as she laid eyes on me.
"Oh my god Kara you can't just strip in here!" I giggled. "Though I love that bra on you girl, pink is totally your colour!" It was true. The bra looked amazing against her dark copper skin. God, I wish I was tan. Sadly, the more time I spent having fun in the sun, the more freckles I got.

My shifts usually consisted of six hours, and since I was in school and couldn't work in the mornings, it was usually the night shift. The store closed at 11 pm- and you wouldn't believe the weirdos that came in at that hour.  Honestly, who in their right mind went book shopping at 10 o'clock at night? Unless you desperately needed the next book in a series it was just creepy.
One of the benefits of working there was being able to read all the books. The manager said it was necessary, with a wink, so that I'd be able to recommend any book to any type of customer in whatever genre they asked for. As long as I didn't bend the spine or damage the book in any way, I could read it all.

Logging into my account on the computer I draped my sweater over the chair and plopped down. I waved at Kara as she exited the store, cringing at the annoying bell.

The hours were passing slowly, so I picked up my favorite book to reread for the thousandth time. I was obsessed with 'Enders Game'. The doubt if he was doing the right thing,  all of the strategies from the War Games, and best of all if this was the morally right thing to do.

I always loved a good book that questioned your morals.

A slow pitter patter like beads hitting the roof tore me from my thoughts. I knew it was going to rain. Shit. And all I had with me was a hoodie. Thank god Mom was picking me up. Speaking of the devil, my phone buzzed with a message from her.

'Sorry sweetie I can't pick you up. I had to go into work for an emergency.' My mom was a nurse, and apparently, there was a shortage of staff at the hospital right now, not to mention that she was the best so she was always requested.

I can't walk home in this storm! It was pouring outside! I loved the rain, the smell, the noise, and the feeling of cleansing that you get with it. But not enough to get drenched. Whatever. I guess it wasn't that big of a deal. Hopefully, it will clear up by the time I finished work.

I got back to my book, only stopping to look at the clock every so often.

When the shift was over, I gathered up my belongings and shut down the computer, turned off the lights and stepped out into the now slight drizzle. Feeling the rain pick up again I quickly locked the door behind me and started the long walk home.

My clothes were soaked. My hair was dripping down my back. My teeth where chattering. Wiping my eyes I looked at my phone checking the time. Sigh. Another twenty minutes till I reached home. As the screen turned black, I caught the reflection of a car's headlights on it. The car was trailing behind me silently.

It was probably nothing, I thought. The roar of the engine was barely heard over the downpour, but I was positive that it was close behind me.

I walked on, rushing to a point of jogging and quickly turned the first corner.

"You're just being paranoid" I croaked out. "Just calm down." I slowed my pace peeking behind me. The car was still there creeping along behind me!

I took off down the street, my feet pounding against the pavement. The car sped up until it was leveled with me. I stopped suddenly. so did the car. What. The Fuck.

Immediately the passenger door popped open. My breathing hitched. Ryder was sitting in the driver's seat staring dead ahead.

"Get in."
