Superiority Complex

I immediately took a step back, away from Ryder.

"I-I'm so sorry." My shaky voice was bearly above a whisper, betraying my nerves.

He took a step towards me, reaching out to grasp my arm in his hand. I flinched slightly at his touch, while my face must have shown my unease and he immediately let go.

That didn't stop him from taking a step closer though.

"As I said," Watching his lips moved to form his words I realized I had never been close enough to really study him before, "it's fine. You, on the other hand, don't seem to be."

My mouth opened in shock, ready to disagree when he stepped closer.

What is it with these twins and invading private space? If he came any closer I was sure I was going to self combust.

"Yo Riley are you okay?" Thank god for Seth. He must have noticed my distress and had come to save me like the prince charming that he was.

Ryder came closer still, and placed his arm around my shoulders. "He's fine."

Seth's face hardened, as his eyes swiveled to meet Ryders.

I could feel the anger oozing off of both of them in waves, challenging each other. If this went any further I feared a fight would break out. And it was rather obvious who would come out on top.

"Well, he doesn't exactly look it, now does he?" Seth retorted.

Ryders face contorted into a look of pure hatred and I feared for Seth's physical health at that moment.

"I-I'm fine Seth, it's okay." Damnit, I always stuttered when I was nervous. I made a move to stand next to my best friend when the arm around me tightened.

"You heard him." I could practically feel Ryder's smug grin radiating off him. "And don't worry, I'll make sure he gets home safely."

Seth's eyes jumped from mine to Ryders debating what to do. I tried to smile reassuringly, but it probably came out all crooked. It was enough to make the decision for Seth though, as he took a step back, hands lifted in mock surrender.

"Call me" He mouthed at me as he turned to leave. The sound of the doors sliding shut behind him echoed around in my mind.

Ryder's arm never left my shoulder as he steered me through the place, thankfully avoiding the booths and settled on one of the tables.

He pulled out my chair for me and finally let go. "I guess chivalry isn't dead then." I croaked to myself.

"Stay." He said and then walked off to the counter to order something. Did he think of me as some sort of dog that he could just boss around? Well, I'll show him!

I gingerly turned around in my seat preparing to bolt.

But then Ryder smoothly slid into the chair across from me and handed me a styrofoam cup.

"Drink." He commanded and I raised the cup to my lips swallowing the fizzy drink in slow gulps.

Why did he have to come here of all places? I had never seen anyone from school here before, let alone him.

"I was feeling peckish, this place is cheap and close to my house." He answered my unvoiced question almost like he read my mind.

I sipped the cool drink as a response.

"What about you?" He broke the awkward silence. "Why are you here with him?" He growled out.

Him? "You mean Seth?" I questioned.

"Yes. Him."

"We always come here. Every Wednesday night."

"And yet," He stated, "It's Monday morning."

"I wasn't feeling well. Seth took me here to cheer me up." My confidence and bratty attitude were creeping back.

His eyes narrowed to angry slits. "And why did you need cheering up exactly?"

Since when was it his fucking business? The last of my quivering, sniveling, nervous self, washed away with that single thought.

"Why does it fucking matter? This is my fucking happy place where I can come and stay away from all those prying eyes at school, away from all reminders of her. And yet, here you are in all your fucking glory! Can't you just leave me alone? Isn't it enough that you've seen me at my rock bottom?"

Ryder took my rant in stride. He looked like he was expecting this sort of thing, almost like he had prodded me into flushing out my anxiety with anger.

Not a word was said to cut through the silence after my outburst, leaving me squirming in my seat. I hated the quiet.

There was just something so defining about the silence, like when it was quiet enough it became too loud. My ears started to ring, my temple pounded, and my eyes would strain to catch the source. It usually occurs early in the morning, where the sky wasn't exactly blue anymore. In fact, it usually looked sort of red.

As you can tell, I'm an expert when it comes to late night - early morning antics.

"Are you done?" His tone had changed, it was harsher, more demanding. Gone was the nice facade who didn't mind the stuttering and the clumsiness. He might have wanted to push me out of my panicking faze, but he would not tolerate the abusive temper aimed at him.

"Come." He stood up, towering over me with his 6'2 feet.

Since I didn't move from my spot he impatiently yanked me up, pulling me against his broad chest.

"Look," I pulled away, exasperated. "I'll come with you. But please, for the love of all that is sexy, stop fucking touching me."

"Fine." He lifted his hands in mock surrender and stomped out the door.

"H-Hey! Wait!" There was no way he was just going to leave me here after he scared off my only ride home - Seth.

Ryder's swift stride flattered for just a second, but it was enough to let me know he heard me.

"You forced Seth to leave! And you promised him you would take me home. Safely, if I remember correctly."

We reached his car, the same one that he had driven me home in when I was caught in the rain.

Just seeing it shot pangs of anxiety through my body, reminding me of the awkwardness of the car ride, the close proximity and worst of all; how I had called him during my panic attack.

Ryder strode over to the driver's side and smoothly slid in. He started up the engine and rolled down the window.

"Are you coming little minou?" His words spurred me into action as I scoffed at his tone of voice.

I pulled at the hande expecting the door to swing open smoothly. It did not. Yanking harder I started to get frustrated. This car looked brand new and shiny, not a scratch on it. So why was the door stuck?

I looked up at Ryder for help and seeing his growing smirk I realized what he had done. He had locked me out.

"You never asked for a ride. Why should I give you one?" God, I hated that smug look on his stupid face.

"Gee, well I don't fucking know, maybe because you offered?" He could definitely hear the desperation as I tugged at the handle harder still.

"Ask me for a ride then. And be cute about it." What? Was he seriously going to make me ask for it? This was all kinds of messed up.

Clearly, he and his brother had a superiority complex.

The defeat was evident as I finally grumbled out in a sickeningly sweet voice: "Can I please have a ride home? Pretty please?"

His eyes glittered with satisfaction as he finally pushed the button to unlock the door and let me in.

"Though you could have been way cuter than that." He started as I clicked my seatbelt on.  "Maybe throw in a little pout or something. You know, the ones you do so well. Where you kind of jut out your bottom lip and widen your eyes? Anyways." He sighed and finally hit the gas.
