Chapter Nineteen

Chapter Nineteen

I was nervous walking side by side with Max as we walked towards the house. I knew Bret was going to have a fit about Max and me being gone and he was going to beat the shit out of both of us. When I caught the scent of Bret my heart stopped and my body started shaking. Max noticed my fear and grabbed my hand tight, telling me he was right here.

“I’m actually scared.” I whispered to him.

“Turn the fear to strength and determination.” He whispered back.

I tried to do as he said and slowly it started working, I held my head up high and when we came to a stop waiting for Bret to come out and met us I was determined to get away from him forever. But when Bret’s scary pissed off face appeared on the deck all the strength and determination I had just built up disappeared I was that scared girl again. Max squeezed my hand and took a small step in front of me so he was half blocking my view from Bret as he made his way to us.

Breathe K just breathe, I told myself with each step Bret took.

He stopped about ten feet from us. “What do you think you two are doing?” he growled through clinch teeth. Hell, if he was this mad because we left he is going to kill us when we try and break free from him.

“We want you to release us Bret.” Max said calmly. With my free hand I grabbed Max’s arms and held him close to me.

Bret let out a loud howling laugh.

“We have done as you said for twenty years, more for me, we never disobeyed, and we never asked questions. We have been loyal to you and now we want to go on our own.”

“So you can join another pack, I don’t think so.” He sneered.

“We are not joining any pack Bret, we simply want to explore and live on our own.” Max has never looked so strong and fierce to me before, seeing him stand up to our maker for not only himself but for me as well made me see him in a totally different way. Now he wasn’t only my brother and my best friend he became my protector, my guide. He was someone I will stand next to for anything and everything, against anyone and everyone. He was the most important person in my world. I now live for him and now Ryder.

Suddenly Bret’s face went from pissed off to a psycho grin, making me grip Max’s arm and hand tighter. Whatever he was thinking was scaring the crap out of me but whatever was about to happen I had to be ready for, we had to be ready for. I closed my eyes and listened to my surroundings in the house I heard my other brothers breathing, in the distance I heard deer run and in the far distance I could barely hear my mates heart beat. The soft sound calmed my nerves and gave me the courage, the strength to handle whatever Bret was coming up with in his mind.

When I opened my eyes Bret’s face suddenly appeared. Max let out a growl and pushed me back a little bit squeezing in between Bret and myself. Bret didn’t even pay any attention to Max, his eyes were stuck on me, with that dangerous look in his eyes and the psychotic grin, “Katherina, I release you.” My mouth literally fell open. He smirked at me and turned his attention on Max, “Max, I release you.” Then he stepped back only a foot so he can look at both of us, “I promise you my pets, you will be begging to come back to me very soon.” With raised eye brows and that evil face he turned and walked back towards the house. I was stuck in the spot I stood and so was Max. What had just happened? This had to be a trick; he had to be planning something. I thought I was scared before now I was frightened more then I have been before in my life.

“Let’s get out of here K.” Max turned and dragged me along as he ran through the woods. We didn’t stop running until we met in the spot Ryder and his pack mates were waiting. When I saw Ryder’s face, I ran up to him and into his arms, still never letting go of Max’s hand.

“What happened?” Ryder asked.

“We will talk when we all in the house.” Max responded.

Ryder didn’t argue with him. Ryder motioned his head to the side and all of his pack mates went ahead of us. He held on to me the whole way back to his house, when Katherina saw us emerging from the trees she ran into Max arm, still he didn’t let go of my hand.  As we walked into the house Max squeezed my hand before letting go and sitting on the couch with Katherina and Ryder pulled me onto the couch and held me close, he kissed my head before asking, “What happened? Did it work?”

“We wouldn’t know if it would of worked, he released us.” I answered.

“He what?” Both Katherina and Ryder asked at the same time.

“Released us.” Max answered, “He has a plan,” Max said looking at me, “I don’t know what it is.” He told me.

A small smile came upon my lips, “I don’t either, we need to be prepared for anything.”

“We will be. Every day we will train, we know his moves, his motives, everything about him. We will be ready and prepared.”

I nodded in agreement.

“My pack needs to be ready I can’t have them at risk, we will all train every morning together. You two can teach us how Bret and the others move and fight.” Ryder said. “and no Katherina you are not involved in any of this.”

“You cannot tell me what to do.” She snapped crossing her arms over her chest.

“Yes I can I’m older.” I turned and looked at him and the grin on his face made me giggle. Then when a pillow smacked him in the face I busted out laughing, I couldn’t hold it back.

“By seven stupid minutes, doesn’t mean you’re the boss of me.”

“Wait, wait, wait, seven minutes? Your twins?” I asked.

“Yup.” Katherina answered, “And he thinks he is the boss of me.”

“I am when it comes to this pack and you are not going to get involved in this.” His voice was stern now.

“I agree with him Katherina love, I don’t want him to know I have found you. Please for me stay here, were your safe. I promise I will always come home to you.”

Awe, Max was such a softy now.

Katherina sighed and nodded receiving a sweet kiss from Max and like before I couldn’t hold it back, “Awe!” I let out.

Max and Katherina laughed, then Max threw the pillow at me but I was smart enough and quick enough to catch it and throw it back whacking him in the nose. Max then jumped out of his spot and grabbed me picking me up and slinging me over his shoulder.

“Let’ see who is the toughest now missy.” He said as he walked me out the door setting me down about twenty feet from the house. I saw Ryder and Katherina on the porch with a smile on their face waiting to watch us goof around.

“I’ve been practicing.” I winked at Max. Causing him to laugh aloud and wiggle his eye brows.

“Let’s see then.”
