Chapter Twenty

Max and I were standing only six feet away from one another, both taking a step to the side when the other would move. A smile was plastered on my face and seeing Max’s smile made me happy.

“Don’t let my size fool you big brother.” I winked at him.

“Trust me I know you’re a little devil” returning my wink.

Then I dropped my smile and put on a worried face, “Oh my god, Katherina.” I whispered and that’s how it started.

Max let all of his guard down and turned around to look at the perfectly fine Katherina standing on the porch with her brother smiling and now waving at him. I jumped on him tackling Max to the ground then quickly took his arm and pinned it above his head. I had him in a weird head lock where he could only move his feet, “Loser.” I whispered, but loud enough so everyone could hear making Ryder and Katherina laugh.

Max grunted then with his legs kicked himself off the ground forcing me to the ground. Somehow the little shit well big shit was straddling me, “Don’t try showing off little K, is distracts you.” He shot back also making his mate and mine burst out laughing.

With my flexibility I kicked my leg up and hit him in the head knocking the smile off his face causing me to laugh aloud and lose the chance to kick him off of me. Before I could recover he swung me up and on his shoulder again.

“Katherina love,” he said in the sweetest voice I have ever heard, “Where is the closest river?”

“Don’t you dare.” I said trying to squirm off his shoulder. During my attempt to get free Katherina must have told him because he started running in a direction, Ryder and katherina were close behind, I looked up at her, “Family?” I yelled and she giggled.

I heard the running water and started to really fight with Max. I sat up so I could punch his face and when my fist connected with his nose he laughed, “Now there is my K.” and dropped me on my butt is the freaking river.

Instantly I got up and punched Max again. I don’t think he thought I would get up that fast because he was shocked when my fist hit his face again. Not giving him a chance to blink I swung my legs out tripping him to the ground and land head first in the water where then I straddled him, “Plan didn’t work out so well huh big Max.” I teased.

“It worked perfectly,” he replied, “I wanted you to kind of fight with me not goof around. You need to be ready to fight against your other brothers and us fighting against one another will help that.”

“I thought this was for fun.”

“It was at first but then the thought came in my head when you were goofing off and I figured we needed to be ready to fight against Paul and Chad, we might not be as close with them as me and you are but they are still our brothers.”

“Your right,” I sighed and when I saw the worry in his eyes, “I give you permission to hit me.” I said in a dramatic voice. Even though I was dead serious and he knew it, it lightened his mood.

My head was pushed a little forward but not by someone’s hand but by a snow ball. “Let’s get ‘em” Max whispered so quietly only my hearing could hear.

One, I mouthed.

Two, he mouthed.

“Three.” We yelled together getting up with snow balls already in our hand and chucking them at our mates. We all played outside for hours, having snow ball fights which we let our mates win so they could feel good, of course. Then we built a snow man and made snow angels, it was a nice distraction from the serious problem we were facing.

That night we all had a family dinner. Max and I never had family dinners, we only had family hunts. This was a change for us but a great change. Most of the night Max and I watched as Katherina and Ryder teased each other and told stories of one another to try and embarrass the other. Yeah try and say that five times fast.

It was a fun night; I couldn’t even tell you when the last time Max and I actually laughed like this. After dinner Max and his mate disappeared up stairs, but not before Max kissed my head and Katherina hugged her brother and I.

“Would you like your own room tonight?” Ryder asked me as we walked up the stairs.

“I think for a while that would be the best.”

With a frown on his face he showed me the guess room, I held back my laugh, he looked like a sad little boy.

“Sleep well sweeteheart.” Ryder kissed my cheek and I watched him open the door across the hall from me and wink before he shut the door. Of course he would put me in the closest room to his. I walked into the guess room and crashed out on the bed where I fell into a deep restless sleep.

“Hello my pet.” He whispered into my ear, waking me up.

My eye shot opened and right when I was about to scream his hand came over my mouth.

“Didn’t I tell you, you were mine?”

My eyes still wide opened I just stared at him not answering.

“Didn’t I tell you, you would beg to come back to me?”

Tears instantly fell out of my wide eyes when Bret moved to the side to revile a beaten and tied up Ryder. Bret slowly got off the bed and made his way over to my mate.

“Please.” I begged in between sobs.

Bret slowly lifted a gun to Ryder’s head, “Silver bullets really are a bitch.” Then he pulled the trigger.
