"I didn't mean to hurt you"
"Please, please don't leave me. I always say how I don't need you but I always thought you'd come right back to me."
Nights were cold. Days were tireless and dull. I remember how you stormed out of the apartment that night. The night I confronted you about her.
You didn't meet my eye. Instead, you glanced up for a moment at my bruised arm, then your eyes flickered to where a hand print lay across my cheek. You winced as I flinched. Then you left.
The bed beside me remained empty. And even though I shouldn't have, I missed the warmth every now and then. Even though I shouldn't have, I replayed our fights and wished that the flat wasn't so goddamn silent. Even though I shouldn't have, I still wrote on a post it note to tell you that I loved you before I went off to work. Even though I shouldn't have, I still loved you.
I remember coming home to a voicemail. Your voice filled the emptiness in both the room and my broken heart as it played.
"Evelyn."
My heart constricted and my head spun and my blood ran cold at your words.
"I didn't mean to hurt you"
And I didn't want to believe you.
I couldn't.
