Before WWII, Germany was close friends with Peter "Van Daan" Van Pels. Their loneliness and shyness brought them together, and they saw each other as brothers. Peter looked up to Germany more than his own father, which Germany didn't mind in the slightest. When WWII started and Peter was forced into hiding because he was Jewish, Germany felt as if a part of him was gone, as if he were no longer complete, and the fact that it was his fault gave him many sleepless nights. After the war was over and Germany learned that Peter and the rest of his family had been killed in a concentration camp, he cried for hours. The guilt nearly killed him.
