Omertà, Aufiero's Return

Chapter 14

Noni fell asleep right after he ate which is good because it gives Aufiero and I time to talk. The fact that Carter thinks I'm actually gonna help him baffles me. Like, who does he think I am?

"You do know I'm not helping you friend right?"

Aufiero lifts his head up. "Why not?"

"Well, for starters, that's illegal"

"So...."

"AUFIERO!"

He chuckles. "Honestly, I dont care if you help him or not"

"Good"

He smiles and kisses my cheek. "You're so beautiful "

"Let's not" I murmur. Smirking, he pulls me closer to him. "I wana get you pregnant again" I laugh at his comment. "No thanks"

"Aw c'mon. I wanna be able to rub your stomach and kiss it and feel the baby kick. I wanna go to doctors appointments and pick out baby clothes"

"I don't think I should get pregnant again" I say. "Well, not right now at least" He sits up and frowns. "What's wrong with getting pregnant right now?"

"Nothing. I just don't want to get pregnant right now"

"But-

"It's nothing okay. I just...I don't want to"

"Why not? Noni's not a baby anymore. You're not working so what's the problem?"

"Well, I kinda wanna start working again"

"I don't want you to work"

"Why?"

"Your job is dangerous"

"Aufiero"

"I'm serious."

"Whatever. You're being selfish"

"How the hell am I being selfish?"

"Because you say you dont want me to work. And then you want me pregnant again. Like, did you even consider how I feel about that. That's 9 months of carrying around another baby. My body cant handle that again. I just cant"

I squeeze my eyes shut to keep tears from falling. "Did something happen while you were pregnant with Noni?"

I shake my head. If he were to find out what happened, that would be another life taken and I can't have that happen. "Noelle, are you telling me the truth?"

"Yes, I am. I'm just scared okay. You don't even know how nervous I was when I was pregnant. I don't wanna go through those feelings again. It's just too much"

He sighs. "I'm sorry" I whisper. "No, it's okay. Let's just go to sleep" 

He pulls me back onto his chest. I try to close my eyes but they flutter back open at the sight behind me eyelids.

-Flashback-

"Sucks that Aufiero isn't here to protect you. That's gotta be sad. He goes to prison leaving you pregnant."

He chuckles and walks behind me. "Your ass has gotten fatter" He hits it causing me to shake. "Pregnancy looks good on you"

"I wonder how Aufiero's gonna feel when he comes home and you and his child is dead. That's gonna be a sight to see man"

"Any last words Noelle?"

He walks back in front of me. "Such a pretty girl too" He laughs wickedly. "You're going to hell" I mutter. "What did you say?"
