We headed over to the library and searched at least fifty books a day and found nothing on Nicholas Flamel. Hagrid was shocked when we told him that we were going to reasearch on him.
"Unless you want to tell us who Nicholas Flamel really is?" I asked. "It'll save us a ton of work."
"Just a hint?" Harry pleaded. "I'm sure I've read his name somewhere." No matter how hard we tried, we couldn't get anything out of him so it was settled that it was up to us to find out who he was.
...
Just before the holidays started, Professor McGonagall introduced a new girl to Gryffindor. She had flaming red hair, pale skin and green eyes. She seemed very shy and on the verge of tears.
"Quiet please!" McGonagall yelled over the noise."This is Megan Potts. She was supposed to be sorted with all the other first-years in September but her letter didn't arrive. She's been sorted now into Gryffindor-" She paused to allow all the Gryffindors to clap warmly. I noticed that Megan flinched a bit. "Do make her feel welcome." McGonagall left and Megan sat down uneasily near the fire.
"She looks familiar," Harry said uneasily. I shrugged.
"Maybe," I murmured, realising that she did in fact look familiar.
...
The next morning was Christmas and Hermione, along with everyone in my dormitory (except Megan, who took the spare bed) had left for the Holidays. I woke to a small pile of presents on the end of my bed. I glanced up, shocked, to see that Megan had no presents. Hurriedly, I grabbed an empty card from my bag and wrote it to her, leaving it on her bed while I unwrapped a present. She woke up.
"Sorry Megan, did I wake you up?" I apologised. She waved her hand airily and noticed the card on her bed. She slowly opened it and pulled out the card, smiling.
"Thank you Dani," she beamed. I smiled back. "It's the first ever card I got." The smile flitted off my face.
"Really?" I gasped, and she looked on the verge of tears. "I'm... so sorry, I never knew." I hugged her warmly, feeling it was the right thing to do.
"My - my parents are dead," she whispered. "I lived in an orphanage... it was awful."
"Well, we have something in common," I said quietly. "My parents are dead, I lived with adoptive parents who abandoned me..." Something in my pile of presents caught my eye and a smile spread over my face. "Hey, your presents are here!" She smiled again and we began to unwrap presents.
...
At Christmas dinner, I noticed Megan was a bit queasy when she glanced up at the teacher's table. Then I realised who she was looking at: Serverus Snape. He was glaring at her, hard.
"Are you okay?" I asked, fiddling with my new jumper that Mrs Weasley had sent me.
"Mmh," she murmured, still staring at Snape.
"Snape scares me a bit too," I said softly, and she flinched. "What's wrong?"
"He's my adoptive father," she whispered, hanging her head. My eyes widened in horror. "He hates me..." I didn't know what to say so I just hugged her. When I let go, I decided to change the topic.
"Hey, you don't know anyone called Nicholas Flamel do you?" I asked her.
"Uh I've heard of him," she said. "I do know him - I just can't remember."
"Me neither," I sighed. "It frustrating."
"Did you know they keep a three-headed dog here?" Megan said, taking the advantage that the subject was not about Snape. "I ran into it yesterday evening, when the staircase moved. Terrifying... I think it's guarding something. It's standing on a trap door."
"You saw that too?" Harry asked, who was sitting opposite Megan and I, next to Ron. "D'you want to help us find out who Nicholas Flamel is? It's been a pain in the neck finding out." She nodded, beaming. Seeming a little happier, she finished her dinner quickly. We made our way to the library, only to bump into Snape on the way.
"Miss Potts, where do you think you're going?" Snape hissed.
"Library," Megan squeaked, staring at the floor.
"I don't think so," he said coolly. "Come with me."
"What's wrong with going to the library?" I snapped. "It's not against the law is it? Or in your book it is? Seriously..."
"5 points from Gryffindor," he snarled.
"For telling the truth?" I said, outraged.
"It's okay," she whispered, looking alarmed. "Don't - you'll get in trouble." I glared at Snape, who glared back.
"Follow me Miss Potts," he spat. She sadly turned her back on us and followed him down the corridor. Hatred for him had grown ten times stronger, if that was possible. I followed them and pressed an ear to the door he had just slammed shut. "What do you think you're doing, hanging around with the Potters and Weasley?"
"They're my friends!" Megan replied, her voice muffled. "And their names are Harry, Danielle and Ron!" I smiled.
"Who would want to be friends with you?" he sneered, and I yelled, outraged, before realising I had blown my cover. The door opened and I straightened up, my cheeks a delicate pink. "What are you doing here?"
"Why don't you just leave Megan alone?" I shouted at him.
"5 points from Gryffindor." I fell silent, but my true intention was to start screaming at him.
...
"I want to know who sent this," I said, holding Harry's unusual (yet cool) Christmas gift: an invisibility cloak. If you put it around you, you turn invisible - how cool is that! "I want to give them flowers - or something."
"I was thinking," Harry said quietly, so Ron couldn't hear. "D'you want to explore the castle tonight?" I nodded eagerly, feeling suddenly adventurous.
...
We crept through the cold halls of the castle, under the cloak. I shivered violently.
"Lets go to the library, we might find something in the restricted section," Harry suggested. We went over, unlocked the door and took a random book from the shelf. A face emerged from the pages suddenly, making my blood run cold. It started to scream. Hurriedly, he closed it with a snap and threw it back to the shelf. I wrapped ourselves in the cloak and we ran off, hearing Filch somewhere. We ran into a random room and closed the door, the cloak slipping off.
"Danielle? Harry?" I realised it was Megan. "Thank god! I've been searching everywhere- I almost got caught by Snape. Is that an invisibility cloak?" He nodded.
"Hey what's that mirror?" He asked, staring at the tall, elegant mirror standing behind her.
"I don't know, but this engraving it says Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi," she said, poiting at the top of the mirror. "But backwards it says I show not your face but your heart's desire."
"Interesting," I said, walking up to the mirror and looking in it. I gasped; there was a red haired women and a black-haired man on either side of me. "Mum? Dad?"
"Dani?" Harry asked. I looked around but they weren't there, only Megan and Harry.
"Look in the mirror," I whispered. Confused, he walked up to the mirror. He, too, looked startled at the reflection. "It's Mum and Dad right?"
"What are you guys talking about?" Megan asked, bewildered.
"We see our parents in the mirror!" He said excitedly, pointing at it. "Maybe it shows our family."
"I never knew who my real parents are," Megan said quietly. Immediately, we both moved away from the mirror, indicating she should look into it. She did and her eyes bulged.
"Well?" I questioned her eagerly. She shook her head as if trying to deny something. Then she turned on her heel and ran out the room. Harry and I looked at each other, shocked.
"What do you think she saw?"
I'm going camping so next updates won't be until Sunday/Monday. Hope you enjoy this chapter!
