The vehicle hit a lot of bumps on the road, suspending each of us in the air only to come crashing back down on our bottoms each time. The others were asleep. The mother and her daughter were snuggled up together in rags. Mother slept, sitting up. The jolts made it impossible for me to sleep. So, I watched out the window at the passing trees that seemed to wave good-bye to us in the wind. The flowers on the trees and the bushes of berries around them painted a beautiful scene, but I couldn't enjoy it.

I felt a pang that hit my heart and made my stomach turn into hard knots that couldn't be undone.  My thoughts started to wonder as I gazed out the small window. My mind couldn't come up with an answer to why these Nazis separated our family, women away from men. Deep down I knew the answer. It wasn't to have tea and cake with us.

Krista squirmed beside me, trying to get comfortable on the large rags left in the back for blankets. She didn't seem to notice the bumps or jolts because she never stirred or complained. I smiled at my innocent, blind friend.

"Alisz, what time is it?" she whispered, still half asleep.

I looked out the window once more. "Close to morning. The sun is rising over the trees," I replied. She slowly sat up, yawned, and rubbed her pale, cloudy eyes.

"How can that be? It felt like I only slept for a few moments."

"You're asking the wrong person. I'm stupid when it comes to logic. Ask my mom."

"You are not stupid. Stop pranking me."

"Time goes faster when you're dreaming about boys." I nudged her side gently. Krista's smile warmed me, seeming to forget our situation. I smiled back, happy to see her innocence.

Our raucous laughter pierced the relative silence of the vehicle as the engines hummed and wheels hit more ruts in the road. Krista wiped away tears that came to her eyes and coughed. "Oh, hush."

The vehicle ran over another bump, throwing us into the air and slamming us both back down to the hard floor. We moaned in pain and rubbed our butts, still snickering.
"So, that's why I dreamed of flying when I was sleeping. But I always fell," she said in a laughing voice.

"Didn't think it was the boy making you fly?"

"If only, but sadly, it's only a truck."

We laughed louder at Krista's remark until the old man in the vehicle yelled at us.

"Stop that damn racket! I am trying to sleep here!" he growled at us.
