there was a moment right after Flossy opened her eyes that everything seemed fine. nothing settled in. she remembered nothing. it was bliss. for that single moment, she was almost okay.
then the moment passed and everything came back in flashes. she heard Rosemary's words echo against the walls of her empty mind. she heard herself crying, denying the information provided to her. she felt herself longing for that woman to take back what she said: that she wasn't haunted by her husband's mistake and that she truly loved Flossy.
Flossy spent that Sunday cooped in her room. sometimes she'd sit back onto her headboard and just stare at the opposite wall. sometimes she'd watch an episode of New Girl to cheer herself up. most of the time she would do anything to keep herself from thinking about it.
she went downstairs three times: once around twelve for breakfast, probably at three for lunch, and at seven-thirty for dinner. no one said anything to her and she replied with nothing back. it was both solemn and pugnacious to her. she wanted her parents to care about her more, not any less.
so Flossy went to bed angry that Sunday night and it carried on into the next morning. she dressed in black from head to toe, hoping that someone would realize her lack of color and not approach her. people gave her looks as she marched down the hallway with Dancing With a Wolf played in her ears. when she stopped at her locker, someone was daring enough to actually come up to her.
"go away," she told him immediately. she didn't even look at him because she was much too focused on getting things out of her locker.
"awe, come on. are you still mad at me about Saturday?"
honestly, she forgot he even talked to her that day. "not everything is about you, Tommy." she smirked as she said the name because to Diff, calling him by his legal name was just as bad, if not worse, than calling him a curse word.
"what the hell is your problem?!" he shouted, earning the eyes of various onlookers. usually Flossy didn't like people in her business but today in particular, she didn't care one ounce.
"you!" she hollered back. "you can't walk all over me anymore just because that's what you think is love! you think I'll always give you exactly what you want, just like the typical Taurus you are -"
"so what does this mean?" Diff yelled to her. and she was just about to answer when Lesla came over.
"this isn't the time, Lesla!" Flossy expostulated, whirling on her and claiming her as the next victim in her path.
"who peed in your Cheerios this morning?" Lesla retorted with a look of hostility in her golden eyes.
"wow! so funny! laughing from 2008!" Flossy was being mean, she knew it, but she was angry and this was how she dealt with her emotions.
"what did I do now?"
"nothing," Flossy replied dejectedly. "I'm just done with how you try so hard to fit in with us, when all of us know how you're just feeding us lie after lie about who you are! I bet you're lying about your sexuality too because I honestly wouldn't put it past you to stoop that low."
"you know what?" Lesla blared in response. "you're right." and without hesitation or time for someone to halt her, she turned around and pinned Diff to the lockers behind them. Flossy glared at them with detachment, almost confusion as to why she should care about what was enduring before her eyes.
