Scene II
It is now morning, the lights are still off but the daylight brightens the room. Lillian is seen lying the floor, it is apparent that she had cried herself to sleep. A young girl, Lily, is sitting on top of the bed peering down at Lillian. Lily is wearing an old pair of baggy jeans and a t-shirt with peace signs on it. Lillian is still in her tight black outfit which is now wrinkled.
Lillian blinks her eyes as she begins to wake up.
Lily: Good morning.
Lillian: Great, you’re still here. I was hoping that last night was just a nightmare.
Lily: I told you I’m not going away.
Lillian holds on to the bed as she pulls herself up. She walks over to the vanity and looks at herself in the mirror.
Lillian: Look at me, I’m so ugly.
Lily: Tell me something new.
Lily stands beside Lillian and looks in the mirror as well. Side-by-side they appear different in clothing, hairstyle and body frame, but their faces are the same.
Lily: I guess that story was just a lie - not all ugly ducklings will become a beautiful swan.
Lillian: Hey, that hurts!
Lily [shrugs]: You said it first. Boy, are we hideous.
Lillian [aside]: How can she think, or how could I have thought I was ugly? Look at her, she’s beautiful. What I would do to be that petite again, to be that young once more.
Lily brushes her hair while Lillian combs through her hair with her fingers.
note: This is the second part for a play for the Summer 2013 Writing Challenge. The prompt was to include an aside.
