Scene VI
Lillian and Lily stand proudly in the living room, which is now sparkling clean. Lily’s hair is now tied up in a ponytail and wearing yellow rubber gloves. Lillian is holding a mop in a mop bucket - there is a huge smile across her face. They admire their hard work for a few moments. Lillian then pats Lily on the back.
Lillian: Good job, Lily!
Lily looks admirably up at Lillian and gives her a pat on the back as well.
Lily: Thanks, you too. We sure cleaned she place up, eh?
Lillian: Yup, that’s for sure. I couldn’t have done it without you.
Lily [laughs]: And I wouldn’t have done it without you!
Lillian: I don’t know about you, but I’m sure hungry.
Lillian looks at her watch.
Lillian: How about we make some dinner and call it a night?
Lily: Sounds good to me!
The set is changed to the kitchen. Lillian and Lily are seen cooking and gracefully moving around the kitchen. Music is played throughout this: Heart’s “Barracuda”. Soon enough dinner is ready: salmon burgers, a simple salad with ranch dressing and punch. Lillian and Lily sit down across from each other at the kitchen table to eat.
Lily: Mmm, this is good!
Lillian: Sure is. Haven’t had punch in a long time, it always has a little zing to it.
They finish eating, smiling the whole time.
Exeunt.
The set is changed again to Lillian’s bedroom.
Lillian and Lily reenter, both changed into their pajamas: Lillian in an old pair of blue pajama bottoms and an oversized black t-shirt; Lily in a light blue nightgown. Lily gleefully jumps into bed. Lillian brushes her hair as she looks at herself in the vanity.
Lily: You know what?
Lillian: I don’t know. What?
Lily: You’re not too bad.
Lillian: Alright then. I’ll take that as a compliment. “Not too bad” is better than bad I suppose.
Lily rolls her eyes.
Lily: You’re better than “not too bad”.
Lillian puts down the brush, smiles, then snuggles into bed next to Lily.
Lillian: I had a good day.
Lily: Me too.
Lillian: I think this could be the start of something good, for both of us.
Lily: Yeah. [yawns] Good night, sweet dreams.
Lillian: Sweet dreams... I sure hope so.
Lily turns to sleep on her side.
Lily: You will, I promise.
They both peacefully fall asleep.
The curtain falls.
note: This is the seventh and final part of a play for the Summer 2013 Writing Challenge. The prompt was to add a "punch" to your ending.
