BEEP BEEP BEEP! My alarm clock blared in my ear. My eyes flew open and I bolted upright. I rubbed my tired eyes. When my finger found the off button on my alarm, there was an eerie moment of silence. It didn't last long however. I soon heard the the thundering footsteps of my younger brother, Colin, running toward my door. He rammed his body against it and it flew open.
"Wake up Kat! Wake up!" He shouted, bouncing like a kangaroo.
"I'm up! I'm up! Now stop!!" I yelled. He jumped off my bed and ran down the hall to wake my parents.
I slowly crept out of bed. I pulled out a worn black shirt and a pair of tattered old blue jeans and threw them on. I walked over to the mirror and looked at my short, ruffled red hair. I quickly combed through it with my fingers, leaving it crazy and wild. Perfect! I grabbed a pair of black and red cat ears and nestled them on top of my head. I did one final turn in front of the mirror before I trudged down the stairs. The whole house was awake by then. "Good morning sweetie!" My mother's sugary, sweet voice cooed. "Ready for the big day?" my mother asked. I groaned and rolled my eyes.
The "big day" my mom was referring to, was the day I was moving to my Aunt Zoë's place in Boring, Oregon. I was quite fond of Zoë but I did not want to be away from my friends during the summer. I guess I couldn't have avoided it either way though. My dad got a big job in California and the whole family was moving from Pennsylvania. My parents and my brother were going to try to find a house to live in while I rotted away in "Boring, Oregon". My mom told me I needed "fresh air" but that's just her way of telling me she needed time away from my teenage mood-swings.
A car horn beeped outside. "Time to go kitty!" My mother said sweetly.
"Please, just call me Kat!" I sighed. I took the last bite of my breakfast and trudged upstairs to get my suitcases.
My dad helped me load them into my aunt's little green Nissan Cube. I jumped into the passenger seat, next to my Aunt."Hey Kat!" she said cheerfully. I smiled in response then took my earbuds out of my bag and plugged them in. I stared out the window like I was in a sad music video. Zoë didn't try to make conversation for which I was thankful. We rode in silence for the whole car ride.
