The next morning, I woke up early to birds singing outside my window. I was about to head downstairs to scavenge for some food when the old red book caught my eye. I threw on some clothes, scooped it up, and started to make my way downstairs.

As I descended the stairs, an eerie quiet struck my ears, broken by the slam of a car door. I carefully made my way to the parlor. I spotted the front door which was cracked open. I crept towards it. Before I could peer through, a hand grabbed me and pulled me outside. I opened my mouth to scream but a hand covered it.

"Shhh Kat, It's me!" Zoë's hushed voice whispered. "We have to keep moving!" she said and pulled me into the spooky forest. I turned to look behind to see what we were running from. There were two hooded figures with large, creepy smiles. Their eyes were hidden under their hoods. They seemed to glide across the ground. I started to pick up speed. Zoë slid to a stop in front of a large and very tall tree. She knocked on the bark and a door opened. It must have been an elevator because when we climbed inside, we shot up the trunk. It stopped near the very top. Another door opened and Zoë pulled me out onto a thick branch.

"Do you have the book?" Zoë asked. I looked down, I still had it clutched in my hands. I nodded. "Good, now take this," She handed me a locket in the shape of a heart with a clock inside. "When the minute hand hits 12:00, jump off this branch. Whatever you do, do NOT let this book out of your sight. Good luck," Zoë finished and kissed me on the forehead. Before I could protest, she had jumped back into the tree and was gone.

I stood at the edge of the branch, hands clutching the book and locket, watching the clock tick closer to 12:00. Was I really going to do this? Of course not! I had common sense and it was telling me that my aunt was insane. Then I remembered the hooded figures. Those were definitely real and a threat. What could I do? "I guess I have no choice." The hand hit 12:00 and I leaped.
