Chapter 1

Tris's POV

I stand in the middle of what used to be the pit. Now it is home to what is left of out city.

Once the factionless were defeated, we all came here, considering this is the only place that was somewhat in tact besides Amity.

And we decided not to go there considering they wanted "peace" above everything else.

So, here I stand in the middle of chaos. People running along the narrow walkways, yelling back and forth to each other, and of course being reckless.

Or at least the Dauntless are.. Them remaining few people that are standing on the floor are just... standing there waiting for something, but i'm not exactly sure what.

I look off to the side and see Tobias walking toward me. He has bags in each hand that look like they are filled to the point of no zipping.

"Alright Tris we need to get going. We have a long ride ahead of us." We have been planning this trip for quite a while now.

I can't decide if I'm excited or not. I mean i will be with Tobias and were leaving to get away from everything with our old lives.

His father, Marcus, is here somewhere and Tobias hates the thought of being in the same place longer than five minutes with father.

And of course there is my bother, Caleb. Or should i say my dirty traitor brother Caleb. He has tried to talk to me once, and he didn't get farther than "Beatrice we need to ta..." Before i walked away.

Even though my brother betrayed me, I still love him. And the Dauntless inside of me just wanted to punch him right in the throat.

I couldn't do that to my brother.

So now Tobias and I are leaving to go to someplace I'm not sure where.

There have been a couple of people that left the city and went beyond the fence to see what was there.

Word has come back, and there is a whole civilization beyong the fence.

So we are going to check it out for ourselves.

Katniss's POV

"Rue! Rue!"

I'm calling her name and chasing her.

She is running through the forest. "Stop!" She's running straight into the fire.

I can't do anything to stop her. She just keeps running. I hate these.

I hate feeling useless, and staying here in district 12 just brings back all those horrific memories from my time in the arena.

That's why we are leaving. We are going to the outskirts of District 8.

To make a new life for ourselves. Hopefully I will get better, I know he worries about me.

He's too good for me. I know it. And i thank God everyday for the miracle that is Peeta Mellark.

Rue keeps running and running, closer to the fire.

I feel like someone is chasing me too. So when I feel a hand on my shoulder, I immediately slap whatever it is that is touching me.

I turn and find that it is Peeta's hand. I look down, ashamed.

"Sorry."

I mumble. He just nods and rubs my back soothingly.

Classic Peeta. He kisses my cheek softly. So softly, I almost don't feel it.

"It's fine. Are you okay?" I nod, not really wanting to go into detail.

"Daymare wasn't it?" He asks this so softly that it's almost like he didn't mean for me to hear it. I shake my head no.

"No not really. I want to leave. Are we ready? Everything all packed?"

I stand to my feet, ready to leave this life behind.

"Yes. Bags are packed. Tickets are ready." Alright this is good. I grab a bag on the way out.

"Train leaves in 15 minutes. Let's go."

We walk out the door. Peeta turns to lock the door, but I stop him.

"No need to do that. Nobody really cares anymore. Just leave it open, that way if mom wants to come by, or Haymitch needs a place to pass out."

He nods and I look back one more time. This is it.

The beginning of my new life.
