They had to be there early today, for the sole purpose of "gathering supplies", which is dumb in my opinion, but we all woke up bright and early the next morning. The alarm went off at 5:45, and I was ready by 6:00. I walk down the stairs, taking one of Tobias' bags with me, looking back only once to see him standing there, waiting for me to walk.
I set his bag at the bottom of the stairs, and walk into the kitchen like I usually do. Katniss and Peeta are already seated with pancakes on their plates, a whole breakfast buffet in front of them.
"I couldn't sleep, so I decided to make breakfast." Peeta says sheepishly, shoving another piece of pancake into his mouth. I smile slightly, and take me usual seat next to Katniss. We have become friends over the past several months, and she has decided to let me help with the baby.
"How are you feeling this morning, Katniss?" I ask, putting a glob of cream cheese onto a toasted bagel. She shrugs, and takes another bite of pancake. I give her a pointed look, and she finally gives in.
"The pancakes have made it a bit better, but I'm feeling a bit queasy." She said, avoiding eye contact with Peeta. His eyes grow worried, and he pushes away from the table to scour the medicine cabinet for her vitamins. He puts them down beside her, giving her the 'take them now' look before she swallows the pills.
"Well I'm sure it's just nerves. Nothing serious." I say, waving my hand in front of my face. She grimaces, and places a hand on her bump. Peeta doesn't notice but I do. I raise an eyebrow, and she sneaked her head frantically.
"Katniss, can I speak to you a minute? Alone?" I say lid enough for everyone in the house to hear. Peeta's head pops up from his plate, and he grins at the two of us as we leave the room.
"Katniss, are you really alright?" I ask, placing a hand on her shoulder. I am concerned for her, and I would hate for her to have to have this baby in the middle of nowhere. She sighs, and shakes her head.
"No, I have been having small contractions all morning. I can't tell Peeta though because he will worry, and then not let me go on this trip, and this is my job! I have to go, no matter how much I don't want to!" She ends sounding exasperated. I put my hands up in surrender, and give her a small smile.
"Well, first off, I wasn't going to tell in the first place, and second off, he is just concerned. I mean your huge pregnant, and your about to go into the woods for two weeks." I say, hoping to get my point across to her.
"She is right, you know." Tobias' deep voice rings through the room. I give a puzzled look, as to say 'where have you been?' But he waves me away. "You'll be fine, but let Peeta worry a bit. He is a new dad, and he's concerned." Tobias says before heading off towards the kitchen.
I grab his arm, and pull him back to me. I give Katniss a pleading look, and she nods, returning to the kitchen.
"Where did you go? You were right behind me on the stairs, and I got to the kitchen, an your weren't there." I ask, my brow furrowing. He sighs, and points to the front porch. Caleb is sitting there alone, looking out into the fields in front of our house.
"Just talk to him Katniss. That's all he wants. And besides, you are about to not see him again for two weeks." He urges me towards the door, but right as he is about to push me out, I stop in my tracks.
"No, I have given him plenty of chances. I am done with him." I say shortly before returning to the kitchen. Tobias sighs, and follows behind me. He nods to everyone seated, and takes a seat beside me. He piles his plate high with various breakfast foods, and we all eat in silence.
About ten minutes later, a ding dong comes from the front door, and I am the first up to answer it. Logan is standing there, a bright smile stretches across his face as he Greta me with a very chipper 'Good Morning, Miss. Prior!'.
I nod in return and allow him into the house. He walks straight to the kitchen where everyone is gathered, and greets them almost the same way.
"Alright well, Katniss, Tobias.. Say goodbye! You two have a long trip
In front of you!" He says, nearly bouncing with excitement. I give a confused look, and he grins in return. I wear the same look as I walk towards Tobias, worry suddenly washing over me.
"Alright, I guess this is it." I say, trying to keep my voice even. The only family I have will be gone for two weeks, with no contact back, and that scares the hell out of me.
"This is it." He says, wrapping his arms around me. I bury my face in the crook of his neck, and stay that way until he pulls away.
"Now be the brave soldier I know you are, and go kick ass for me."
I say, grinning up at him. He chuckles loudly, and nods his head.
"Will do. Now, I really have to go." He says, and bends his down to touch his lips to mine. They lingered for seconds before pulling away.
"I love you." He says, and places a kiss on the tip of my nose. "Be brave." A kiss to the cheek. "Be careful." A kiss to the place right between my eyebrows. "And never forget that I'll be back." A kiss to the forehead, and he is gone. I can't help but laugh at that last part, and walk to the front door to watch as he, Katniss, Caleb, and Logan begin the walk to the woods. I sigh, and walk back to the kitchen.
Peeta is sitting at the table, his hands in his hair, looking stressed out.
"She will be fine." I reassure him. "She will be back, and in our arms in no time."
And we didn't know at the time, but that sentence couldn't have been more true considering the events of the next day.
