The men dropped me off near a pile of garbage. “Stay out of trouble.” They spat at me. I stuck my tongue out at them and continued walking.
I was alone, again. I kicked a rotten apple to the side. I needed some new friends, like that Parade guy and Mikey. I hoped that Mikey was okay. It was my fault that he was in Hell. I shouldn’t have thought of that plan.
“It’s all my fault...” I mumbled. “I bet that everyone else on that Parade is in heaven. They didn’t send anyone to Hell. They didn’t try and sneak into heaven.”
I continued talking to myself, bringing down my self-confidence with every step.
Finally, I stopped and looked up. My feet were now stepping onto concrete, something totally new in this world of dirt and garbage. When I looked up, I saw that the concrete was actually a basketball court, with a basketball net! And right in the middle of the court, was a basketball. It didn’t look like it was deflating or anything. Actually, it looked like someone got it right out of the store!
I ran over and picked it up. I bounced it on the concrete twice. It was in perfect shape! I quickly looked around for someone. This could be someone’s basketball, and taking it would mean a big fight.
But, there was no one around, so I shrugged and dribbled it around the court. It felt great! After a year of sitting in a hospital bed, I thought that I would lose my game.
I dribbled the ball up to the basket and took a shot. It swished through the net with ease.
Apparently not!
I took some more shots, and dribbled around the court some more. I felt awesome. My legs actually worked, I wasn’t coughing up a lung, and I wasn’t even breaking a sweat! I didn’t feel thirsty or tired either. I felt the best that I had in years.
I sat down on the court, facing the net. I rolled the basketball to the pole and it rolled right back to me. I thought about it for a second, how awesome it was to feel normal. I kinda liked this place... It’s a lot better than being at home and dying.
~ I was in my room. Well, in my room at the hospital. Mom was in the hallway with Auntie Marie and Dad was busy with Elena and Tobey.
“Auntie...” I croaked. Nothing. “Auntie...” there was silence and I waited for her.
Finally she and mom came in. “Yeah Ben?” She asked. I pointed to the tap on the other wall. She smiled at me, grabbed a cup and filled it up with water. She passed it to me, and now it was my turn to smile at her.
“Marie, what do you think; blue with green flowers or just a classic black?” Mom held up a magazine to her face. Auntie looked at me. I smiled and weakly held up two fingers.
She turned back to mom and pursed her lips. “Ahh, I think we should go with the second one.”
Mom looked back at the magazine. “Well, I guess that that would suit Ben a bit better...” Marie looked back and winked at me. I smiled softly and rang the nurse’s bell. ~
I thought more and more about how life was like back when I had cancer. I remember setting up my wills...
~ Mom and I walked into the big huge building. I looked around in amazement. There were marble floors, lady and men in sharp business suits, all carrying briefcases and a waterfall in the corner.
“Mom, why are we here?” I looked around, overwhelmed by everything. She squeezed my hand and murmured something to the lady at the desk. The lady got up and we followed her to another room.
“Mr. Kensworth, we have your next client.” The lady smiled down at me. I weakly returned one. I wanted to know what was happening. Now.
“Ahh yes, I’ve been expecting you two.” The man, who had short red hair and a grey suit on, came over and shook my mom’s hand. He looked down at me and smiled warmly. “You must be Benjamin.” He stuck out his hand to me. I ignored it and went with my mom to sit down. He returned to the back of his desk.
“I imagine that this will be for you, Miss?” He looked over at Mom. She shook her head and looked over to me.
“No... Ben here has a... condition. We just want to be on the safe side...” I grimaced down at my feet. I hated that, my “condition”. I sounded like I was born with this. Oh wait...
“I see. Well Benjamin...” He clapped his hands together, snapping me out of my thoughts. “Are you ready?”
“For what?” I asked. I looked between them, mom staring coolly ahead and the man shuffling in his seat uncomfortably.
“For your will darling.” My mom answered, looking over at me. “We went over this in car, did we not?”
“No...” I muttered and the man pulled up something on his computer.
“Well, you’ll just have to sit tight there for a few minutes. Your mom and I will get this all figured out...” he continued looking at his computer. I sighed loudly and looked out the window.
A countdown was starting in my head. 364 days until I... you know... die. Joy. ~
The basketball game was now depressing. I stood up and kicked the ball as far as I could. I didn’t go very far. I continued walking, looking for something else to do. There wasn’t much to do in here, except for walk around and talk to random people. But then, they get sent to jail... or you abandon them...
