Chapter Six - Drowning

One week later
Peeta POV

It's been a week since Delly left and even though she told me to follow my heart and be with Katniss I just can't bring myself to go see her.

I have the feeling she'll be angry or upset at me. I should've been there for her. I let her deal with her own pain. I left her when she needed me the most.

I still hear her scream every night and occasionally I hear her scream my name, she mostly screams Prims name.

I see she's not left her house, not even to go to Haymitch's house, which worries me. I don't know what she's doing, how she's doing but most of all I'm worried because I don't know how she's feeing.

I have been baking bread for her though, I give it to Sae and she gives it to Katniss.

Sae says the first time she presented the bread to Katniss a confused look grew on her face, Sae explained that I made the bread and apparently Katniss' eyes lit up, which makes me smile just thinking about it.

So tonight I'm doing my usual routine, I have my tea - no sugar - and two slices of bread while I sit and watch the Capitol news. It gives me updates on the Districts. I'm about to call my Dr. in the Capitol as I do every night when I hear a bang from outside.

I put down my cup and plate and make my way over to the front window of my house that over looks the Victors Village.

I see a large shadow and a little shadow, almost the shadow of an animal, that's when I hear her.

She must've been walking back to her house and stood on its tail because she shouts, "Stupid cat!" Katniss.

But somethings off about her voice, it doesn't sound right. It doesn't sound like her.

I look closer and see she's holding something in her hand, it looks like a bottle, oh no.

I see Buttercup trying to get attention, dancing around Katniss' feet but this causes her to trip over and fall.

I run out my front door, grabbing my jacket on the way, but not bothering with shoes, and run towards her.

When I get to her I see her eyes are rolling around and she's ice cold. I sit down beside her, lift her up a little and bring her so she's sitting in my lap, I put my hand to her cheek and I feel how cold she is, I start stroking her cheek with my thumb trying to warm her up but it just makes Katniss close her eyes and I see a little smile form on her lips as she leans in closer to me.

"Katniss" I whisper, trying to get her to tell me what happened, "Katniss" her eyes open a little and she scans her surroundings before her stormy grey eyes land on me.

The smile fades and suddenly she's trying to stand up, I go to help her but she pushes me away, it's only know I see how drunk she actually is.

"Get away from me!" Katniss shouts.

"Katniss I'm trying to help you, let me take you home" I try to reason with her.

"No! You can't just do that, you can't pretend to be there for me and then leave. Everyone leaves me and I can't take it anymore!" She shouts with pain in her voice, I see tears falling down her face as I step closer to her, "Everyone leaves" Katniss whimpers.

"I'm not going to leave you" I say.

"Yes you will, Ive lost everyone Peeta. My dad, Rue, Cinna, Finnick, Johanna, Effie, Gale." Her voice starts fading, "Prim." I see her quickly wipe the tears away from her face, "I mean even my own mother isn't here anymore, God, even Haymitch is leaving me! Don't you get it Peeta, I'm the person everyone wants to be away from, no one wants to be burned by fire. They've just all realised it now"

"None of that is your fault Katniss. I'm still here and I'm never leaving you again, always remember?" I say as a shy smile appears on my face, "And what are you talking about Haymitch isn't going anywhere?"

Katniss smiles and then laughs a little, "Oh yes he is. He's sick of looking after me. He's going to live in the Capitol, this," she says as she holds up the bottle, and she starts laughing harder, "this was his goodbye present, his advice to me was just to drown my sorrows," she takes another mouthful of the liquid, "so that's exactly what I'm doing"

No. This isn't right. This is my time to help Katniss. I reach forward and take the bottle out her hand, she tries to get it from my hand multiple until I see her trying to steady her balance as her eyes look upwards.

I drop the bottle and catch her just before she hits the floor.

I check her breathing and see that it's steady, she needs to be put in warmth and she needs to eat and drink water when she wakes up.

I carry her, bridal style, into her house as I find the door was unlocked. I go up to her bedroom and place her under the duvet, taking off her shoes and jacket in the process.

I light a fire in the fire place and make sure the room is at a good temperature. I walk over to her bed and see her looking so peaceful. I smile and lean forward to kiss her forehead.

I go to walk out the door when I hear a voice, "Peeta, will you stay with me?" Katniss whispers.

I turn around and walk over to her bed, almost instantly Katniss puts her head on my chest and I wrap my arms around her, "always" is the last thing I say before I shut my eyes.
