A/N I had loads of fun and tons of laughs editing and rewriting this chapter. Definitely a feel good chapter! Hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it <3
Chapter One- Cakes or Berries
“Scarlet!” my mother called out.
“Yeah” I answered, walking up to where she was doing the morning dishes. I wrapped my arms around her stomach and leaned my head against the back of her left shoulder.
“Have anything special planned for today?” she asked casually. I resisted my urge to roll my eyes, even though she couldn’t see me, she was a mind reader when it came to me. Silence drifted in between us, creating an answer for me. “If not, we can just go out into the forest and pick some wild berries to make muffins.”
I smiled up at her, “You should really stop reading my mind mum” I playfully slapped her on the arm.
“Now why would I pass that gift up?” she questioned, smiling down lovingly at me.
I scoffed in response, burying my face into her shirt and thick auburn hair; I couldn’t help thinking that’s where I inherited my thick multi toned hair from. I froze when I heard her next words. “Since you don’t like cake” and what was worse she was using an infuriating mocking sing-song voice which she knew I couldn’t stand. Of course she would play the ‘annoy the hell out of daughter’ card- how lovely.
Once I got over the initial disbelief, registering the statement I mentally scowled and I didn’t bother to stop it from coming through onto my external features. My supposedly loving mother was giving me a look of amusement, which made my scowl deepen if that was even possible.
“Hey! It’s not my fault that I love wild berries more than cake!” I defended, backing away from her crossing my arms across my chest. “Berries are awesome!”
“I’m not one to judge, you know that Scar” unplugging the drain and the noise of the water going down the pipe replaced the silence between us.
Once the silence commenced, I decided to take this game to the next level. “Oh that’s right. You never judge, you just criticize.”
I heard her sigh, taking that as a sign of breaking I internally smiled. How wrong I was. “That wasn’t what I was getting at Scarlet Jane and you know that” she used my middle name signalling that she wasn’t pleased with my choice of words. I gave her cheeky grin and casually pretended that I was checking out my nails, an attempt of acting bored or deeply fascinated.
“Well, all I was getting at was that it didn’t come from my side. Besides I would never criticise you, but that doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching you squirm from time to time” she stated, kissing my forehead. “Now get that little berry loving butt of your up those stairs and get dressed” turning me around and shoving me in the general direction of the stairs. I stumbled forward from the ‘gentle’ force of the shove and glared at her which she merely laughed off.
As I inaudibly grumbled walking up the stairs I heard my mother’s angelic voice telling me she would take it upon herself to drag me down the stairs if I wasn’t out the door within the next ten minutes. Rolling my eyes, sometimes it felt like I was living with a big sister rather than a mother. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, completely the opposite; I’ve always wanted a sister but since my father died and mother never remarried, she was the only choice, the best choice- in her opinion. She’s both my sister and mother as I’m both her sister and daughter- we get along like a house on fire, surprisingly enough that has been proven and to answer any questions it takes exactly 47 minutes and 13 seconds for a single roomed cabin to turn into ash. Certainly not one of our finest moments, but that’s as bad as it’s gotten- well to my extent of my knowledge anyway.
