The week leading up to Christmas had been relatively fast for Ally. Her last shifts at the coffee shop before her holiday leave were busy for her, with floods of customers coming in to buy last minute Christmas gifts from the small shelves near the counter. The coffee shop stocked small home made goods, such as bath bombs, lip scrubs and a wide variety of scented soy candles. After Ally finished her last shift in the early evening, she decided to buy Gemma and Anne a bath bomb and a candle each for Christmas. Her car smelt of raspberry and vanilla all the way home, and she tried to fight the urge not to keep the gifts herself.

Harry, on the other hand, had been trying to decide on the perfect present for Ally, but nothing had come to his rather high standards. He searched all over London for something that would mean the world to her, and he even had the thought of buying her an Audi. Ally's corolla had been fixed after her small accident, but he felt extremely uneasy knowing she was still driving in a car that seemed unsafe. He hoped for her sake that the mechanic had changed her tyres, and he made a mental note to check them the next time he seen her.

It was the evening before Christmas Eve, and Harry was in his own little world. He sat on a small black leather stool in the most cherished room of his chalet, wearing nothing but gray sweat pants and black socks as he held a long wooden paint brush in his teeth. The slow and peaceful music of Bon Iver was playing rather loudly through the surround sound in the ceiling, and Harry lightly tapped his foot on the floor boards to the tune of Skinny Love. The wooden easel in front of him held a canvas with the start of what he was painting. He had an image of a dense pine forest in the spring time, but with gloomy and foggy weather hanging over the trees. He contemplated on what colour acrylic to use next as he stared at the array of dull shades of green.

But the paint tubes that sat sprawled on the floors at his feet, somehow reminded him of Ally, as did Bon Iver's music.

He screwed his eyes shut and took the paint brush handle out of his mouth, placing it in the large metal bucket along with the rest of them and sat there. He sighed to himself as he tied his hair up, and his thoughts wondered into dangerous territory.

He had to leave for Los Angeles on the twenty ninth, in time for New Years Eve. The guilt of the mission had hung low as the date grew closer, but he knew he had to do it. For Ally's sake, and for his friend's sake. He didn't want to tell Ally in fear of her not understanding the situation, but he knew he had to tell her before she would find out through the press, and he knew that wouldn't go down well.

But, he only had one thing that was consciously repeating itself in Harry's confused mind, causing the guilt of the whole thing to become thick with discontentment.

She's going to leave you. She's going to leave you.

He couldn't stop thinking about it, and staring at his half finished painting of the dull pine trees reminded him of the forest behind the viaduct that Ally took photographs of in Holmes Chapel.

Harry stood up and threw his unfinished work to the floor and stood on the wood frame that held the canvas together, until it broke.

Poor little Ally had no clue.

Ally had taken retreat into her soft white bed. She held a large cup of warm honey, chamomile and vanilla tea in one hand, and her phone in the other. She had spontaneously decided on a whim to call up an old friend of hers, hoping that maybe she could tag along with whatever her friend was doing for New Years Eve. To Ally's delight, her friend Tess had happily agreed to take her under her wing on a night out clubbing in the city. Ally would be lying if she told herself she wasn't excited to get out, but a little part of her felt low. She wanted to spend it with Harry down in central London, watching the fireworks as they exploded in the sky, and laughing hysterically at Harry as he blocked his ears with his fingers and had one eye open. Ally didn't understand his intense fear for fireworks, but she decided that she would never understand most things about Harry.

Especially why he was acting so abnormal.

But, Ally simply shrugged it off. She trusted him. He had never given her a proper reason for her not to trust him, but she was quite naive.

She was in for the shock of her life.
