Chapter 21
"Where's Suzanne?" I heard Zed ask.
"She's just ... Suzanne? Suzanne! Hurry up, we want the pizzas!" she called loudly. "Suzanne!"
"I'm right here," I answered slowly, entering the room.
My arms were both slightly stretched out, hands open palm up. My fingers were in a position where it looked like I was holding two large spheres.
Three pizza boxes where hovering above my head.
They were spinning slowly - I had no real control over that, but I wasn't about to ruin my moment of glory by telling them.
"Bloody heck," Zed mumbled.
I took a hesitant step forward, and the pizzas came with me. Step after step, I walked from the door to the table where steaming chips and burgers lay half open.
As soon as I was at the table, I directed the pizzas forwards, and then down, so that they were slowly hovering half a metre or so above the table. I relaxed and they all landed next to each other in a neat line.
"Ta-da!" I said, grinning at them. They stared, open-mouthed at the pizza boxes, then at me, not answering.
I shrugged and sat down, opened a pizza box and started stuffing myself food.
A moment passed.
Another moment followed.
I realised that they were still staring at me. "You not hungry?" I tried to ask them. It came out something like 'Yom nom hmmmmwee?" but I think they got the picture.
"Bloody heck," Zed said again.
I swallowed the slice of pizza that I had crammed into my mouth. "Stop swearing."
I kept on eating.
Another second. Another slice of pizza went missing.
After a while I looked up at them, still chewing. "Are you sure you're not hungry?"
Jasmine finally found her voice. "Suzanne, you just lifted three boxes of pizzas two metres into the air!" she exclaimed. "And you only got your Wind-bending talents this morning!"
I blushed. "Er, I think so, yeah."
Jasmine slumped into the space next to me. She closed her eyes and rubbed her face tiredly. "Suzanne, you're going to kill me today. First you mess up this morning's plan, then you nearly get yourself killed with Blade - again - and now you lift three pizzas."
"Sorry," I muttered. "Hey, are you lot sure you're not hungry?"
"Of course we're hungry," Jasmine said, starting on a burger. Zed sat opposite us and took a slice of pizza in his hands.
I still gave him a wary look; I wasn't about to forget what made me go to help Jasmine in the first place.
I finished a box of pizza in five minutes. The five minutes passed in silence, all of us thinking our own thoughts.
Finally Jasmine said, "Calm down, Suzanne. Gosh, have we been starving you or something?"
I paused, a slice of pizza mid-air. "Er, I think that I didn't only use the Sun's energy."
Jasmine tutted. "Suzanne, be careful. That's dangerous." I nodded humbly. "But I'm still very proud of you!" she beamed.
I will never understand her. "Could you tell me more about the - er - Sign? The birthmark. I mean, if there is anything else to say about it."
"Oh, you know," said Zed airily. "Lots of legends and myths and stuff."
"Like what?"
Zed looked at Jasmine, and she shrugged. "There is this one that says ... well, that the birthmark gives you another talent. A special talent. One that doesn't appear like the others, through the Transformation, but that appears when you need it the most." He shrugged. "But like I said, it's just a legend."
"OK."
After we had finished lunch, Zed grinned and asked, "Now, what talent should we practice today?"
I pretended to think. "I really can't think."
This chapter's really short - I didn't realise until I posted it. I'll write an extra long next chapter to make up for it!
