Chapter 2
Monday: my most hated day of the week. As usual, I woke up late and rushed around the house trying to fill my schoolbag with whatever I would need for the day. I barely had time to eat breakfast before I rushed out to catch the bus.
Our school used that bus so much that it should have been our own school bus, but they didn'y really do that around here. Shame.
I sat down at the back of the bus, preferring my own company.
Looking around, I noticed an unfamiliar face. Probably just a kid on the wrong bus, I decided. I turned away, but for some reason kept looking back at her. She was on her own, somewhere in the middle of the bus. She had black hair, just like mine, but hers was straight and heavy, whereas mine was a mass of black curls. She had light skin and the deepest black eyes. The girl was wearing our school uniform, so I assumed she was new. But I had gotten used to that. Every new person left within six months if humanly possible.
But she looked different from the other depressed, quiet girls that started out at our school. She had a determined expression on her face, and was always looking around, as if looking for something.
After a minute, I lost interest in her and I looked out the window. We didn't live in the biggest town on Earth, but I still liked looking at the trees and the birds. Jays Town was a simple town, with a simple name and a simple location. In the middle of nowhere, really. It was in the south of England, somewhere alone in the countryside. There was Jays Woods at a few minutes from the park, but no one went in there much. It had become wild, and full of dangerous animals. I had never been in there, but that's what everyone told me.
My concentration was shattered when I heard a couple of high-pitched voices, louder than anyone else's. I looked towards the group at the front, and spotted a few of them looking in my direction. Their eyes lingered on my tangled hair, and they burst in snortling laughter.
But one girl wasn't laughing. That was Melanie, who sat with a straight back and crossed legs, and looked back at me disdainfully. She rolled her tiny black eyes and adjusted her bleached hair, backcombing it with her perfectly manicured nails.
Here we go, I thought, as I did every morning.
Melanie got up and bounced over to the new girl, starting to chat to her endlessly. I was fully expecting the girl to stare up at here in total amazement, and then nod her head at anything that Melanie told her. But, to my immense surprise, she didn't. At first she smiled politely, nodding in agreement to a few things that Melanie was saying. Then she started frowning, clearly wanting Melanie to crawl back to her cave.
But that wouldn't do. Melanie started gesturing towards her group, who waved at the new girl enthusiastically. She didn't wave back. Then Melanie, who was running out of ideas, sat down next to her and opened her make-up bag. She took out a blusher and tried to talk to the new girl about boys and make-up. This obviously bored the girl to high heavens. When Melanie's back was turned, she looked around, until she looked straight at me. Smiling, she winked, and then turned round again as Melanie look out her bright red lipstick.
